Negatory, Ghost Rider. I ride just right. If I didn't have to work, I would ride more.

Yeah, but that's a whole nuther thread.

The trainer is where I do all my hard workouts these days, but you know what I mean.

I know what you mean, and I've never weighed in fake-vs-real, but lordy, I would take real any day, simply because interval time stands still on the trainer. Just a micro-rest please. Just one..

It’s wild how hard ergometer work is. Lately, to give myself a break, I will pick a crowded Zwift loop and chase ghosts for 10 min intervals. Go out hard, get on a fast wheel and if power isn’t FTP or above, attack and catch someone faster. I swear it feels 10x easier then 10 min of erg at Z4 and it’s a target-rich environment when you’re as weak as I am.

Salad, sandwich, mixed vegetables, potato, potato chips.

The chips were separate from the potato.

Potato bread for the sandwich?

When I was at boarding school one of the cooks made a fried bread that we called potato bread due to its shape.

It was good. I wish I had some today.

That may be one reason to get a smart trainer. I've worn a groove in the wheel on the trainer, but it still works. Some things, I have no need to justify spending, but a new trainer? Oh my.....

Ruffles go between the bread and tuna fish.

Winter weight is 145.

Currently 141 because more riding. I am not a stoner.

I enjoy mine, I can tell you that. If you actually use your dumb trainer, as you clearly do, the smart trainer will likely be a massive improvement with no risk of it turning into a doorstop.

What I discovered this winter is that slope mode is much easier than erg mode, so most of my riding is now on Rouvy's course sims. Even workouts are easier in slope mode though, so I'm now redoing my workouts in slope mode and holding far higher power than before. Coach gave me an FTP test Wednesday.

What is slope mode? I like Rouvy for easier rides, when I don't want the competitive stimulus of simulated riders, but I haven't used it much for structured workouts because most of them don't have visuals.

When you ride a simulated course, Rouvy has the grade from the course and you put out however much power you want to (or can), and it makes you move along the course at the rate you would for that power and slope. Shifting gears makes it harder or easier, just like real life. In erg mode, the trainer demands an amount of power (say 200w), and no matter what gear or cadence you use you'll be forced to output 200w. For whatever reason, the same effort feels subjectively harder in erg mode, so by switching from doing structured workouts in erg to riding mostly courses in slope, plus some workouts in slope mode (where the intervals are at, say, 4% grade instead of 250w or whatever), I get more TSS and fitness.

Visuals... visuals are what Netflix is for. I have the workout on my phone so I know what's up while I watch (currently) American Horror Story.
