Bus racks

I need to get my bike across the SF bay to commute. This usually means taking a pretty hefty bike up and down stairs and onto pretty crowded subway cars. I remembered the other day that the cross bay bus has a front rack like this:

I was curious if anyone has successfully used this style of bus rack with a bike with a front fender and front basket. For some reason I recall them not working with a front rack/basket set-up- am I over thinking this?

Try it before you need to commute; catch a bus and ask the driver if you can try putting your bike on the rack.

I've done it with fenders and cantis with reasonable success; I put the arm over the plastic fenders and watch 'em squish, then go back to shape when I take it off. HTH.

I have used this bus racks on many buses in many different towns and states in my travels.
Most public transit systems have an educational video on their website that demonstrates how to use the rack and what the standard routine for that bus service. Check it out.

Best advice.

I’ve successfully used similar racks with two fendered bikes. Neither has a front rack or basket. The wheel clamp sat well outboard of the fender.

I've used the bus rack with two different bikes of mine that have fenders.

One bike has enough clearance and flex in the fender that I'm able to put the arm between the fender and the tire.

On the other bike, there isn't enough clearance to do this, so I just put the arm as far up on the wheel as I can get it which is just in front of the fender. Seems to hold it secure enough.

Used them all the time in Hawaii.

I tried that a few times; the bus drivers were Not Happy and made me fix it.
