Golly gosh... yet another your posts with a fantastic picture on it.

I am fascinated by the ships like this one. All goes back to the days of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and the song by Gordon Lightfoot. Machka and I have driven in that area of the Great Lakes, pirmarily to get back from our unsuccessful efforts in the Boston-Montreal-Boston 1200, but it did give us a chance to a walk through a museum collection on the storm tragedy that resulted in the loss of the ship. And I couldn't miss that.

Of great fascination for me was that ships like the design even shown in this photograph don't exist in Australia, and for the Great Lakes to have created the effects of a storm that caused such a huge loss was just so astonishing to me.

The Great Lakes can produce some testy weather. I took this photo while riding across the country in 1999. Looks like an ocean, but it is Lake Erie between Dunkirk and Buffalo, NY. It was so chilly that evening that we built a campfire. The time of year? Early August.

Cycle cross race is this weekend. I’ve given up trying to get specific days off. Whenever I try, the rest of my schedule sucks. I work a red eye from the west coast this trip, and I am scheduled to land at 6 am the morning of the race. I should be able to get home in time, but then the issue becomes, will I bel able to function after being up all night?

Knowing this was probably going to be an issue I never bought the tires for the race, and the MTB i wanted to use, I was never able to pick up. Told the team leader I just plan on watching at this point. Bummed, I was really looking forward to it.

wow

my neighbor had one cut down - got good money but I don't believe it was close to that level

recall the tree had a funky smell (at certain time of the year)

He took it down himself, had it cut and sold the lumber himself. He’s also got a barn full of dimensional lumber, raw edge maple, raw edge oak and oak flooring milled from trees on is property.

A big knock against modern "enduro" style bikes is their weight. Mine is somewhat low-end and it weighs 32 pounds. More expensive bikes in the category are a few pounds lighter but these bikes are more capable of high speed through rough terrain than any bikes from years ago. My bike is bigger, has more suspension, and better brakes than my first motorcycle.

The tires are heavy, I could put smaller, lighter tires on but these things are amazing. I've gone through piles of sharp rocks and the bike just cruises through. Descending a rough sandstone hill which was a nightmare on my old hardtail 26er is nothing for this set-up.

The tires downhill racers and pro enduro racers use are in the range of 1200 grams. I'm sure the body armor, full face helmet e-bike warriors I see are running downhill tires.

back in the day a number of guys in our group ran Z Max 2.35's - then most moved to 2.1's ... then some moved to 1.9's ... I even dabbled with 1.7's for a short point

no doubt the larger tires are superior in many types of terrain - but the downside (extra weight) can be an issue if there is a lot of climbing

the majority of time on our off road rides was climbing - so many ditched the wider tires for the smaller / lighter narrow tires ...

basically willing to trade seconds for minutes - you could lose 30 seconds (or whatever) in the nasty technical stuff or descents - but gain minutes on the climbs

one of the first rides that comes to mind is a Seven Springs ski resort ride we would often do

after a (too) short warmup - the ride would start basically up the side of a ski slope ; up a trail near one of the slopes ; climb was a killer - two loops of this ride and I was shot

some nasty technical rock infested single track followed the climb and then some good downhills - both where the wider tires would be a huge plus - but many willing to go with the narrow / lighter tires for the climbing

fast forward to current - now riders can take their bikes to the top of the mountain on the ski lifts and ride the designated mostly downhill trails - so little / no concern for the climbing

Jinkies!

datlas 10-05-22 09:55 AM

I must be missing a nuance here, can someone clue me in? The news outlets all say the Phillies clinched a wild card spot and the Brewers are eliminated. But if the Phillies lose today and the Brewers win, they would have identical records and be tied, so there would be a one game sudden death game between them, I would think.

No??

edit: no. No more tiebreakers. https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-tiebreaker-rules

Got clipped on the rear fender by a driver at a 4-way stop on my way to work today. Didn't go down, but I screamed a lot. The guy must have looked right at me with my red jacket and headlight, but didn't register me. He said his mind was on looking for a parking space. He was mortified and offered to take me and the bike home. Worst part is one of my fender struts popped out of its draw bolt/nut and I couldn't find it. It's going to take a week to replace.
