Bike Friday disc brakes
 

hi fellows I am upgrading my llama to disc brakes.I just send Rohloff to change the plate to hold the disc and I am building a new front wheel.
I am buying the Avid BB7 MTB S.Can some one post some close up images of the cailper mounting in front and rear
Do I need some adapter or holder, my bike has the holder in front and rear forks

My BF Silk just had the normal International Standard mounts for disc brakes. I imagine they use the same on all the models.

I just got my Rohloff back now I am thinking to go for a 160mm rear rotor and 180 in front what do you think or should I mount 160 in both?
Can some tell me which adapters I need for the front and rear?

You need to contact Bike Friday and find out what is the largest disc diameter they allow on the front forks. I can't imagine needing much more than 160mm and I'd be thinking that would be the maximum anyway.
Looks like the front forks are IS, but apparently BF use a size out in the adapters so for a 160mm disc you'd need a IS to post mount adapter for 180mm, but again, confirm with bike Friday.. The rear looks like post mount, probably for 160mm.
From my experience the Rohloff rotor doesn't play well with BB7 mechanical calipers as it's too stiff, so if you are going cable, use TRP Spykes (they are a better caliper anyway)

I also would recommend TRP Spyre instead of BB7, they are much better, no need to readjust continuously the caliper like with BB7.

Don't forget that the Rohloff requires a special disc.

Yes I already got my conversion bak from Rohloff which model exactly you are recommending TRP Syykes? will this brakes works with my Avid levers?

TRP Spyre are road/short pull and TRP Spyke are long pull. I believe BB7 come in both varieties but all 3 I had have been replaced by spyres.

I do not know what kind of rim brakes you have with your Avid levers ?

If you have road calipers, then you need the Spyre, if you have V-brakes, then you need the Spyke.

The TRP Spyke will work with your lever.

Maybe an explanation of the difference between the TRP and BB7.

The BB7 is a single piston caliper: it has a piston only on one side that push against the disc and makes the caliper tilt so that the other side of the caliper also push against the disc. This isn't very efficient, it was used long time ago on hydraulic disc brakes too but disappeared replaced by double piston. The only advantage of this design is that its cheaper than double piston.

The TRP is a double piston mechanical disc brake with a piston on both sides of the caliper/disc.

Yes, I had BB7 on a previous bike and now have TRP Spyre on my Birdy, the Spyre are much better and they also weight less.

I have two 160mm discs on my Birdy and its really enough.

Seems a very good offer for your Bike Friday because it includes everything also the IS to PM adapter.

I just got my brakes today and I dont know if I am doing something wrong but in the front wheel the caliper is really very close to the rim as you can see in the images.Can I do something to get more space or it is because this brakes got to pistons? Will be more space with the avid bb7 mtb s?

This is due to the width of the caliper but also the width of the hub flanks.

The distance between the flanks of the hub depends of the model of the hub, for the same over locknut distance, some are narrower, some are wider.

I sen them back ,and I order now the Avid BB7 MTB S, we will see if the are more space

+1 to TRP Spyres.
I have them on my Change 650B gravel folding bike.


Probably the best cable actuated disc brakes available at a good price.

I only have a few mm clearance between my Spykes and the spokes. As long the spokes or hub don't hit the caliper it doesn't matter, because the wheel is always in the same place relative to the caliper.

Incidentally, to me those spokes look wrong for a Rohloff hub, the J Bend is too short so the outer spokes are distorting around the edge of the hub flange, especially noticable with your small diameter rims.. Rohloff recommend using a special spoke with a much longer bend to reduce strain on both the spoke and the hub flange, which are thicker because they aren't forged.

Yes, a special size of spokes is needed for the Rohloff hub to avoid any risk of flange damage.

But with the blue label on that hub, it is an old hub and these recommendations of Rohloff about the spoke size didn't exist at the time this hub was produced and probably mounted into a wheel.

Nowadays, Rohloff also sell and recommend to use flange reinforcement rings.

Yes the Rohloff is an old one but in this rim thanks god traveling more then 15000km fully loaded never had any brocken spoke

Rohloff made a whole document explaining how to lace a Rohloff hub, what spokes to use, how to place them, how to re-lace a hub (taking into account how it was previously laced)... to avoid not only broken spokes but also broken flange.

I just got my avid bb7 mtb s. I mounted the rear with out adapter everythinkg ok.The front one I can 't mount it , it is no possible to put the whell back ther no space for thr wheel.I think the bike shop sold me the wrong one it is for 140-160 I had mounted a 160mm rotor.
Do I need a special adapter?

Hi guys
I went to the bike shop and I got the right adapter I need it one for 200mm disc.I am not sure if I will leave the Rohloff cables like this or I will cut them.I like more the Avid brakes time will tell.This is my wife bike now and I need to wait now for my diamond llama to arrive maybe end of july...
