How old is too old to ride BMX/Race BMX ?


I hear that someone in their 80’s has raced recently. That’s a strong person. Awesome.

A person is never too old,...it's all about being active & enjoying the ride!

When getting anywhere, pedalling always standing on the pedals , all the time,
is no fun anymore..

I think the X games stunt guys age out .. when they can't do it anymore..

Health insurance, for patching you back together on your parent's policy ,
has an age limit... 26?

BMX wheels (20" 406) but more gears and higher seat to sit don and pedal

is a feature BMX bikes lack.

Bmx is not like road in that manner. Long distance is not the point. But most older now go 24/26/29 and collect their childhood or grails. Although a fair share still do FS on 20".

46, race about 30 BMX races a year on both 20" and 24" bikes.

There are a ton of ultra competitive guys in their 40's and 50's who race. About age 60 is where the numbers drop off.

I'm 58. I no longer race, but I ride my 26" BMX cruiser a couple thousand miles a year. I own a lot of other bikes, but I'll be a BMXer until the grave!

Most everyone on old school bmx FB pages is 40+, many ride and race. The Museum, Retro BMX riders and 24/26/29 cruisers (bmx) are good places to check out of you haven't.

I'm 48 and plan to compete in the flatland discipline in 5 years. I broke my femur dropping in the bowl on a wet rainy day. It only solidified my resolve. Attituke and determination,not age,will be the determining factor. In my opinion

Who’s the oldest pro BMx rider?

This... I've recently joined a few FB groups for older folks and there seems to be a bunch of over 40... I think most of them are in Europe though, but still a lot here in the US too... Been looking for some BMX mags and I can't find any.

Myself, I'll be 46 this year and recently started getting back into riding.

Ad of now, I've been riding anywhere from 3-10 miles 4 times a week on either my Trek 4900 Mountain Bike or my Stationary bike in the basement.

I've also wanted to get back into riding BMX and doing some really basic flatland freestyle tricks...
However, I'm afraid I'm a bit big and heavy as I'm 6'4" and 250+lbs...

I used to be good at Bunny Hops, 180s, 360s (every once in awhile) Endos, Front and Rear Wheel Hops. a trick we called the Grasshopper, another called a Cowboy and a few others I can't recall the names of... I'd love it if I could get a BMX bike and get back to what I could do then.

Over my BMX years, I had a GT Pro Freestyle Tour, GT Pro Performer, Dydno D-Tour I think it was, a Haro and a SE Racing SE Quad Angle with Landing Gear Forks...
Not sure what I'd get now... I have no idea what the coolest brands are now, every thing I see looks pretty Generic as compared to back in our day...

@smullen I started back a little over a year ago after being away since mid 30s. I'm 49 now. 6'0 200. But lots of big guys now ride 24/26/29 which is also a FB group. I ride road/MTB also but bmx is my first love. Have a couple old school but ride new school. New frames are strong. Get a 21" top tube or 22" bike if you want to do serious tricks. If not the larger still allow you to so some but are heavier and not as easy. Fun either way. I like old school to look at but new are just much more functional and strong.

I'm riding a BMX and I'm over 40. Only issue I see is that some people may think you're having a midlife crises.

40, just started bmx racing with my kids. No one thinks it's a midlife crisis because I haven't grown up yet ;)

Sounds a lot like me. I'm grown up in many ways, but I quite a kid in others—BMX biking is just one example of that. I suspect that many others who ride in their late years may be to same way. As much as society may this it's a trifle unusual, it's the way I am, and I've one life to live, so I go with it.

I figure one would have a true midlife crises if they failed to do the things they really want to do.

What is a good BMX bicycle for an adult, give me a starting point please, I am only 65 and still growing up. I am being serious, give me a specific bike to shop!
