Found out late last night, my friend I was suppose to go to the mountains with yesterday crashed. Not sure what happened yet but he had to have neck surgery last night. Seemed to be in good spirits.

That's what solved my, becoming a mechanic, problem. I didn't want to learn that mumbo-jumbo. So I became a carpenter instead.. I learned later it wasn't as bad as I built it up to be in my head. But it was too late by then.

Make this a '68 and you have the first car I fell in love with. It was sitting in a marina, broke down. The owner worked there, and was going to sell it to me for $100. O.m.g. I wanted that car. I hounded my dad about it, for months. He finally agreed to look at it. He laughed about it and said "not a chance, It's junk". I was crushed.
But good God what a sexy beast.

A couple of my high school buddies had similar cars 73 and 75 I believe. Very nice cars. The 73 got passed around a little, 3 different owners in our community . The 75 went to someone outside it. I still know where one is. He drags it out every Holiday and details it,, drives it,, then parks it.

And to be honest, no one wins. I had a collision with a young lady on roller blades who just turned in front of me without warning. She was looking at her phone/ipod with both earbuds in. Didn't hear me call out "on your left" and turned left just as I passed her. It's why I don't ride the mup anymore.

So I did the Black bear grand fondo yesterday. 5 hours 5 minutes roughly. One stop for water. At 65 miles.
I left with the fast group. Had no problem on the flats. But there's a section of climbs, 4 large hills in a row that become increasingly steep. Popped me. I was off the back. Never caught up after that. They finished 4 hours 40 min or so.
4 of us were working together after the main group spat us out. I picked a poor time to cram a cliff bar into my mouth, rounded a bend to find the road going up. I almost choked to death on that Cliff bar. Got dropped. Rode for 30 miles alone until the water stop and found a guy I knew to ride with.
Strange thing. We rode the day before the event. My Roam was just fine. The next day when we left, it had switched over to metric. So now I'm looking at kilometers per hour. I don't know how that would have happened. During a nice long downwind straightaway I pulled out my phone and fixed it.
It just goes to show you, it's always something.

When I was just getting into cycling 25 years ago, part of it was being so close to an MUP that took me across town to where I was working. So I started out commuting, then started adding extra miles to my commute, mostly on the pedway. I started out shouting "On your left!" till I noticed that sometimes people would pivot To THEIR LEFT into my path. I never hit anyone, but it convinced me to get a bell. So I rode with the bell for a while, then one day I *ping,pinged* a runner running down the middle of the path, who didn't move. So I kept pinging him, and he STILL didn't move. When I got abreast of him, he shouts "Say Left or Right!" Like I'd pass on the RIGHT? What a moron!!

Then there was the beautiful Sunday I headed out for a few miles and encountered an oncoming couple on what I'm guessing was their maiden voyage on brand new Rollerblades, walking a big Lab on an extendo-leash. They were wobbling, trying not to fall,, while their dog was in the bushes on MY SIDE of the path. I had to slow WAY down and go around the dog. Fortunately I was able to.

That pretty much did it for MUPs for me. I kept commuting on them because it was outside recreational hours, but for MY recreational cycling, I stuck to roads. Then I moved both houses and jobs so cyclo-commuting was out, and I just rode for riding's sake.
