Just took glamor shots of the "finished" Sports (finished till I get off the damned rock hard cork grips, beautiful as they are). It's a '69, I think (my hub has no date, but the stickers etc. date it that way).

Today I rode it 13 miles. Ten with my eldest step-daughter, who was sweating it out on her little cheapy Columbia by the end, and then turned right around and did three with my youngest step-daughter, to get the glamor shots on the first sunny day in a long time. It is heavy, but it rolls so comfortably, I hardly notice the miles going by. Our route was mostly flat, but at one point we have a 250 degree turn to go under the highway and back out. The turn is really, really steep, though short. I just cruised up it in first gear, while both girls had to walk their little bikes up. I have done many moderate hills on it with no problem. I love to go to the grocery store on the Sports. I load up the baskets and ride home: eight miles round trip. If I had a relatively flat commute, I would never use another bike. Unfortunately, I have some monsters on the way to my work. But if I were riding 4-10 miles, few hills... this would be my only bike. Total dream to ride.

Cleaned up the old Gazelle I bought last week...still needs a more thorough detailing, but was able to get the layer of dust and grime off of it. It's a '61 if the date on the S/A hub is to be believed. Really cool old bike...unfortunantly, it will be moving on to a new home soon....

This is a little off the intent of the thread, but it's an English 3spd IGH, an S3x, and the rest carries the venerable Raliegh name even though it was crafted in Japan. On my 5th or 6th ride, I slammed a pot hole... :eek: bent the rim :cry: I have to learn to pay attention to the road and not the scenery and learn to unweight the wheels while spinning. Really a lovely performing machine.

You'll fit, it's a 64cm but the cranks are only 170s.

I won't fit, but I can ride it. I can ride bikes of all sizes, from tiny 12" wheel kids bikes to tall people's bikes. It's in a bike mechanic's skill set.

That is in my size range...but I usually ride 65's :p

Love it! Very pretty. And the first bike I tried to buy when I decided to do a 3-speed, was actually a bright red 5-speed Sprite, complete with chain guard and everything. Still, I think the brown suits me (I even had a brown Nutcase helmet already, though it didn't match my bike at the time). I feel distinguised, and it's unusual. My six year-old has already told me that he wants a bike like mine, in red, when he's a grown-up, but I think I'll wait and see on that one. He also thinks he's going to be a Jedi.

Those photos needed repeating. Beautiful! :thumb: So much to love--the cameo decal, fenders, full circle chaingaurd, locking fork (brilliant!), pristine condition, and on and on. More photos welcome, particularly of the cranks, headbadge and handlebar/light setup.

It's a little Minnehaha Small Barrel Saddlebag from Velo Orange. Under $30, and it's cute. Just canvas and leather. I keep headlamp batteries, a mini screwdriver, my wallet, keys and phone in it when I ride, and that's about what it fits. I managed to shove the zip-off legs of my convertable pants in it too when I rode out to take the shots, but it was a tight fit. It does have an adjustable closure, and that helped. Very small, but that's what I wanted, since I have the panniers. I really like it, but if this were a bike for even slightly longer journeys without the panniers, I'd get something bigger. Link:

It's only a single speed but it is English and appears to be a DL-1 variant. It has rod brakes, rear carrier, full chaincase, Dunlop 26 x 2.0 balloon tires (tyres), a B-33 saddle, heavy rear dropstand, and it's ALL chrome.

I've posted this on some forums before and nobody has been able to positively ID what model this is. I'm guessing it's early to mid-60's vintage. It has two serial numbers (one on the seat lug and one on the side of seat tube.) and neither appear on any of the charts. No date codes on the hubs either. This may have been for the South African market although it has a Nottingham headbadge.

Wow, Kingsting. I think you should get a different bike tray, the kind that lets you mount the bike upside down. Then the setup will look like you can flip it and carry the car on the bike.

Hey! A New Zealand guy on the forums! :thumb: You probably recognized my Mini. ;) It came from New Zealand originally and it still has the original dealer sticker in the rear window. I'll have to go look at it tonight and see what town it came from... I think the dealership was John King cars LTD...

Anyway... Back to the bike you found. The frame and wheels definitely look to be the same as mine, however - it looks to be a lower end model with a hockeystick chainguard and mattress saddle. It also appears to be older judging from the black reflector housing.
After a so-called expert told me that this bike was something that someone made out of a DL-1, I measured my frame and compared it to my Dawn and DL-1. The dimensions are different so this is a model of it's own.
I found a few short articles that mention the balloon tire roadsters and that they were mostly for the South African market.

This is my pride and joy. 1970 Raleigh DL1 and 40 years old this year of which ten have been with me. It is my daily ride and now my only bicycle. I am soon to replace the original Brooks B72 saddle with a more plush Brooks B135.
Of all the modern and vintage bicycles I have owned through the years, this one has been the most reliable, easiest to maintain and easiest to fix.

What kinds of maintenance items would be atop your guys' lists if you were unsure of the maintenance record of the 3-speed Raleigh you just acquired. I was thinking of looking into the repacking the bottom bracket, flushing the SA hub and refilling w/ 10W30. What about the front hub? Repack? Anything else that comes to all of you English bike owners?
