I just got this Cannondale tourer last Friday. The serial number says it was made in July 1989, but the color and cantilever brakes point to it being a 1990 ST400. It has several non-original parts, including 27 inch front wheel and 700 rear, but the frame should clean up nice. It also has front fork mounts for the pair of Blackburn Custom Lowrider racks I bought by mistake last year.https://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/redface.gif I have bunch of spare parts that I was looking for a frame to go with, so I am not worried about originality so much as functionality.

Miyata 610

Got a nice Miyata 610 from cl. Lots of non-original parts but they work nicely: Wolber Super Champion rims, Huret dunopar rd, half step plus granny Sugino, Cyclone fd, Suntour aero levers and Simplex bar ends. It's an '81 with good old center pulls. Total outlay is $290 as it sits. It lacks a front rack but it shows that a darn nice loaded touring bike can be had for a reasonable price.

I had this 1985 for several years and loved it. Had to clear out a couple bikes and I think I regret it now. Nice score!

I have similar regrets about selling too - another Raleigh Grand Prix OMG I should have kept that one!

Presently have 2 touring bikes

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8058889e03.jpg
'92 Cannondale T600 built up from frame with spare parts and a bit of Ebaying.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6ec731b678.jpg
'85 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe purchased off Ebay and modernized a bit.

Both bikes are good riders, would probably use the Cannondale for longer trips and possibly some Rando rides. The Schwinn is a bit heavier, but very enjoyable with the more modern components.

Bags that size were intended to hold spare sew-up tires. 40 years ago, some people were still touring on sew-ups!

so crazy....lol! i jest as i've never ran sew ups, but have seriously considered it a few times. just seems a little more involved than i want to get. clinchers and tubes are just too convenient. i did run across one of those cannondale bags after i made the complimentary post. they want just a bit more than i can do at the moment, though...lol. but, damn...it's practically new looking. and, it's red. i'd rather have blue or some other muted color

Keep looking on eBay, CL or FB marketplace- all of a sudden they'll start flying at you, and next thing you know you'll have a garage full of Cannondale bags.

I'm not sure if it is a good or bad thing, but I remember meeting some of those people 40 years ago. I also remember watching them go through the process of patching and thinking it was utterly insane.

The bag was intended for use for spare tubulars (aka sew-ups), as noted. I've still got one that I use, and it's quite a civilized way to carry a spare tire. It even has a little zippered pocket for a couple of small tools. This was back in the days when Cannondale was a bag manufacturer, and not a bike builder.
Here's a shot of it on my Olmo, which was fitted with tubulars at the time.

Someone on here sold a very similar shaped saddle bag with a roll top and clip a number of years back. I regret not buying more than one. It's by far my favorite bag on go fast bikes. I have something else (actually a repurposed WWII gas mask bag that someone converted into a saddle/handlebar bag) that I like for more upright rides.

Oh the sweetness! My Olmo was the same color. I only had the pantograph shift levers, though. And it was a 54cm.

Also with sew-ups most of the time I had it. I gave it to my little brother 25 years ago. I think he still has it.

I’ve posted this 1986 Lotus Odyssey in this thread before. Just built a new wheelset and added dynamo lighting, so here’s an update:

Awesome. I need to finally bite the dynamo bullet.

I have a Cannondale pack like that but when it isn’t stuffed full the outer end sags like a commercial for ED. It looks like you have another attachment at the very rear of the saddle?? Could you explain how you have it secured there? Thanks..

It's good for a folding tire but I cut off the top of a plastic ginger ale bottle.to give it form. It takes care of any disfunction.😏
