Bike geometry fascinates me.

You can read about bike geo all you want, but it still will leave you with some questions. The next step is to learn about motorcycle geometry and suspension. Everything about bicycles applies, but the extremes (speed, constantly variable geometry) extrapolate the physics of bike handling further. You get to see how these changes and interactions affect handling.

i wonder if they could fix my busted Tiemeyer? Or just make me a clone?

I know a variety of roadies who have had him (them really, father/son team) make bikes... prob 6 people I've talked to who have them, and they are all entirely content.
I know Joe has made track frames, but I don't know any of the folks that have used them. There was one at Marymoor the first couple years I was there, but I don't recall who was on it, and then I saw it on the 2ndhand market a few years later - so that'll be tough to track down.

Given how flexible and happy to work w/ you Joe is (I've had a variety of long conversations with him, without any money changing hands - just talking about hopes/thoughts on bike geo and philosophy... I think it wouldn't be a problem at all. He can super-over-build anything, that's not hard, if you have geo you like, that's taken care of, and there'd be no problem with you selecting which-ever dropouts you want to use - anything that other custom builders use he could get....

dunno - I don't think that custom bikes really have all that much magic to them - for track bikes mostly it is handling (geo)/stiffness (tube selection)/dropouts (standard catalog items).... if you already have the design bits nailed down and it sounds like you do, one high-level welder is about the same as the next.

Alum is almost impossible to "fix" - I know he has taken off the chainstays on a bike he made and put new ones one to shorten it up a bit - but replacing tubes in such a way that they are straight and square is challenging enough that it is a tall task.

When the "free bike" part of my life ends, I'm 95% likely to give Joe a call and have him fab me a bike or two.

ahem, @carpediemracing,

OR, if you really need "THE BEST", call Frank the Welder, he has made a couple ****** looking track bikes in the last two years, and he is the living god of alum bikes.
Granted, it'll be 2K ish, but you'll have an "FTW" bike.

This will most likely be the next one I purchase as well. I really like what he's doing with his frames.

He hasn't posted here in a while. What do they look like?

taras0000 02-27-15 01:42 AM

Tiemeyer-esque, including the track ends which I believe he got permission to use. Remember him mentioning that he wanted to build a track frame but was wondering what ends to use. He said he really liked Dave's design. Frank looks to be running a wider DT, tapered headtube (looks like inch and half to inch and an eighth) rounder seatstays (set low on the ST), and massive chainstays.

Nice! Very nice.

that bike looks like basically the raddest.

We need FTW to come back and tell us about this beauty.

Here's another picture:
https://igcdn-photos-a-a.akamaihd.ne...87998422_n.jpg

It's owned by a rider here at kissena who used to be on the same team as FTW. All I know about it is the chainstays are too beefy to fit a super-9 disc.

taras0000 02-28-15 03:29 PM

Will a Comete fit?

Nice!

Are you talking about the Super 9 (flat) or the Sub 9 (with the 808 bulge around the outside)? That was a known issue with the Sub 9:

If it's rubbing with the flat Super 9, then that can be a problem. The Zipp disc is probably the most popular disc on the track in the US. And the Mavic Comete is slightly wider. So, if that rubs, then maybe he should adjust the chainstays because anyone ordering a custom frame probably has one of those discs.

I'm also curious to know whether or not tubing in the same dimensions as the Alu tubing above is available in steel, ie: make a steel clone of the FTW track bike above. Curious to know how it would turn out in regards to weight, stiffness, handling...

The Zipp Super9 and Sub9 are about the same width. The more common 900 is narrow and will fit anything.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying.

MarkWW 03-01-15 07:55 AM

fwiw it was a super 9, with parallel sides. a 900 fit fine. also, I didn't think the sub 9 came in a track adaptable version.

I could ask my buddy about details if you want. He's a frame builder himself (coarse fabrication), so I'm sure he knows all about it.

taras0000 03-02-15 10:32 PM

That would be awesome if you could do that. I was set on a Tiemeyer (custom) but he stopped taking orders a long time ago. So disappointed, but Dave has more than earned his retirement. This to me looks like the next best thing (and a close second at that). There's some info to be gleaned from Frank's blog (Frank The Welder | Frank Wadelton ? Bicycle Fabrication - a few pages in), but it would be cool to get some of the specs on the build (tube dimensions, frame size, angles, etc) if at all possible.

I take it that your friend went to Frank for the frame as he (Coarse) deals only with steel?

taras0000 03-02-15 10:50 PM

Did some digging and found the specs:

Y'all have seen these before, just a while back.

FRIENDS OF VELODROME RACING IN MINNESOTA ANNOUNCE A DEAL TO REPAIR AND RE-OPEN THE NSC VELODROME

Last week, Friends of Velodrome Racing in Minnesota (FOVR) signed an agreement with the National Sports Center Foundation to repair and re-open the NSC Velodrome.

The NSC Velodrome was built in 1990 by the Schuermann Architects, the world’s foremost experts in velodrome construction, and is unlike any other in North America. In its history, it has hosted the Olympic Cycling Trials, the US Olympic Festival, the US National Championships, the Master’s World Championships – and remains an important venue for grassroots track cycling development. In 2014 it saw its highest attendance numbers ever, hosted a thriving program for juniors, sent riders to the Elite National Championships, Junior National Championships, Master’s National Championships, and the Master’s World Championships.

Last fall, citing a report that outlined the need for a repair, the NSC closed the velodrome. In response, FOVR started an ambitious fundraising campaign. We engaged Matson, Macdonald and Young, a structural engineering firm, to develop a repair specification. After months of work, FOVR has come to an agreement with the NSC: shortly, funded entirely by FOVR’s fundraising, the NSC will hire PCL Construction to complete a $100,000 repair to this unique facility.

This success is due the generous donations of the cycling community, who spoke loudly about the importance of this world-class velodrome. You all - cyclists, fans, business owners, philanthropists, enthusiasts, supporters, friends, and family members - came together to make this happen. Major support was provided by Foley-Mansfield, Cargill, TicketKing, and Medtronic. Thank you all for your generous donations! We have truly been touched by the support and trust placed in us.

Our work is not over. In order to keep the velodrome operational, we’ll have to raise revenue through additional sponsorships and a new fee structure, and we’ll look for ways to cut expenses for the velodrome’s remaining years.

For now, let’s celebrate that we have gained another 5 years of use of the NSC Velodrome. We look forward to celebrating in person at Thursday Night Lights!

What is busted on your Tiemeyer?

Also there is a Tiemeyer bike for sale at the Boulder Valley Velodrome - I will get the size next time I visit (although I recall it has around a 55 cm top tube).

Quinn8it 03-16-15 05:27 PM

The seat binder bolt popped through...Mr Tiemeyer said i was the only one in 700+ frames to do that....

UCI to test mixed-gender cycling events this week - Cycling Weekly

UCI president Brian Cookson says that the cycling events including male and female riders will be trialled this week

Cookson said last December that mixed gender events could include road time trial, and the Madison and team sprint on the track.
Sounds cool! There is precident for this. One of our US Paralympic Team Sprint teams is mixed-gender, one female and 2 males.
