Newest Dura-ace and Ultegra will be electronic only

newest Dura-ace and Ultregra will be 12 speed and electronic only

this is a bummer IMHO

am thinking I am either going to have to get a couple of sets of current Ultegra or look to switching to Campy for either vintage frame with modern mechanics, or hoped for custom....or just stick with 105

Is it not possible to run the Di2 on a vintage frame?

shoota 09-03-21 01:08 PM

At least they still gave us rim brake and no new hub standard.

Certainly possible, and don't hate on it, but I don't want to :D Not surprised at all though

true, almost a surprise there, but probably rim brake on high end will be next to go

Glad I starter padding my parts bin a while ago!

electric doesn’t interest me at all.

Deep down, you want Campy. Now you have an excuse.

I'm definitely e-curious. Saw this product on bikepacking.com for 1x setups:

https://archercomponents.com/

I look forward to the 2 x 11 road version!

The rim brake version does not get the revised STI shape, which supposedly makes the more aerodynamic 'top of the hoods' position even more comfy, so, yeah. The writing is on the wall for rim brakes.

Personally, if I had the money to buy new Dura Ace, I'd probably put it on either a top level CF bike OR a custom steel, something like Officina Battaglin makes.

But I don't. So I'll keep buying old bikes with old groupsets.

You think this is a big deal, wait until they starting phasing out mechanical shifting down the range, like 105, then Tiagra, then Sora, etc., etc. Eventually only Tourney will be non-electronic.

I have predicted in the past the electronic shifting will hit cheapy depart store bikes sooner than we think, because the labor to just put a wireless deraillers and shifters will be that much less expensive than dealing with cables

SoccerBallXan 09-03-21 02:54 PM

The cost of new group sets is abysmal. I can purchase a full course from the Ford Performance Racing School and learn how to drive a performance car professionally (Mustang GT provided), or I can buy 1/2 of a functional bike that shifts electronically.

You can get into nearly any other professional sport, or you can have 1/2 a bike. You can purchase a new vehicle or put a down payment on property, or you can have 1/2 a bike.

Push to start index fingers and shifters have worked for decades. The greatest of all time didn’t use di2!

Hybrid Electronic-Wireless-Mechanical, all wrapped into one package and Bluetooth enabled! Shazam! Never turn a limit screw or cable barrel again. RD adjustments from the comfort of your Lazy Boy.

Neal, now that's not Cino!

Actually, I think it is a rather cool gizmo that would be perfect for my 54 speed Cannondale hybrid. :D

Well, that's because they didn't have di2. I guarantee you if they did they would have used it.

iab 09-04-21 06:36 AM

So clicky shifters are now C&V acceptable? And e shifting is out?

Asking for a friend.

daverup 09-04-21 06:39 AM

Most of the bikes around this forum were built as well engineered, simple, long lasting machines. With new tech, the manufacturers have delivered high performance and high cost, not very simple, not long lasting machines.
Just like the new cars, the new bikes will be junked due to high cost of repair.
The new high performance bikes will make professionals happy with speed and handling, ensuring positive reviews.
The new generation of electronic shifting consumer bikes will work well for the warranty period, then disintegrate into a pile of plastic scrap.

3speedslow 09-04-21 06:59 AM

A plastic bike with many plastic credit cards to keep it rolling!

When 11 now 12 were coming out I snagged a few good 9 and 10 wheel sets for pennies on the dollar. Waiting for the rim brakes to come along now.

Classtime 09-04-21 07:16 AM

3 or 4,years from now, 9200 won't be capable of running the newest updates and 9400 will require a renewable yearly contract. I read the above linked review and the only part I kinda understand is "faster shifting"

I want some 6-7 Speed HG+ chains, cogs and chainrings.

Germany_chris 09-04-21 07:56 AM

I really can’t see any reason to buy Di2 over AXS if I was in the market for electric shifting.

Mr. Spadoni 09-04-21 09:30 AM

Launching groups that depend on electronics to shift at a time when chips are in short supply? What could possibly go wrong?

Mr. 66 09-04-21 09:42 AM

Sounds like more things that can go wrong, for a poop load of money.

Well, if the ad I saw on this site before I logged in is true, then the future is AI equipped self driving bicycles. Engineer ourselves right out of the equation. Just let the bikes out when you let the dogs out. Riderless TDF anyone?

What about a self-powered trailer for randonneuring?
