Fuji Royale on CL
 

Hi,

I am looking to buy a bike on CL and this one caught my attention but I believe the asking price of $380 is a bit high. Let me know what y'all think is a fair offer (for NY). I don't know anything about vintage bikes. Thank you for taking a look.

That is a lot of money for that bike. Granted bike prices are high in NYC but I believe you can do better. Is this the right size for you? FMV would under $200 where I live (a mid sized city in the Midwest) and I'm guessing under $300 even in NYC. This price might be OK but I'd do some more looking.

Heck I'd buy it at the price. If that size works for you, run (don't walk) and buy that bike. Post pics afterwards here and we'll all be a bit jealous.

Price is too high, in my opinion. I might go to $150 on a good day if the test ride proved to be to my liking.

I have had alot of Fujis since the 1970s. They are great bikes that are super reliable and ride well. Whether or not it is worth that much to somebody or not, this is a C&V forum. Many C&V bike-a-holics have a sixth sense for bargain-priced deals. They then go through the bikes themselves, mechanically and cosmetically. It's a hobby. That bike for a local sale in an average market might run $150 to $200+/-. E-bay asking prices can be crazy high. Then there can be shipping charges. For the money they are asking a C&V shopper might get a full Columbus or 531 frame and Campagnolo components. That bike has 27" wheels versus 700c, so tire selection is tight. If money is no object, what the heck. Otherwise, be patient and comb CL and Facebook Market Place. Garage sales and church sales can be great places to stumble across that "additional" bike. Prices can be as low as $20 for a really nice bike, but it's hit or miss.

Got it thanks for all your replies. Should I go for the Melton instead? Is it worth it? Would it be worth it to get it tuned up as well? Im just looking for a budget bike to get around the city that maybe I can upgrade eventually.

Looks like a 1979 Royale in quite nice condition. But it is still a mid-lower level bike.

I like Fuji bikes and used to have a 1979 Gran Tourer, which was one step below. I'd agree with Randy and say that in my area that is a $150-175 bike. NYC location may raise that to $200-250.

If the bike fits (and is available), it is a solid deal at $400. Mike Melton was a first rate American custom frame builder.

Its a bit rusty. How much do you think it will cost at a bike shop to restore?

If you think that's more rust than you want to deal with, you may just want to buy a new bike. That bike is fairly clean and very attractively priced.

+1 the Melton doesn't need a restoration IMHO just a good cleaning a bit of touch up paint in one spot and the paint should be pretty easy to match and new bar tape with a little effort one could doe this themselves for about $50.

I agree with everything that has been said..... but I think the Fuji, if it fits you, is a very good option. Unlike the other bikes that are higher-end, the Fuji is all original and looks to have been well cared for with low miles.

If you're looking for a bike to get around town, you don't need the racing features of a higher end bike. Lower end Japanese road bike of the 1970's were built to high standards so if you look after it properly, it will last for many more years.

This is nice but the chain might be a tad short. A late '80s Deore RD might work better with that triple
