Your advice on a groupset

Hello all!:)
Have not been here for quite awhile

I would like to (buy and) install a new 11 spd group on an old cyclocross bike (of 9 speeds).

1. The current setup of 50/34 and 11-34 works alright for me.
2. in the new build, I prefer to use a 50/34 Dura Ace 9000 11spd crank that I have.
3. I am told that a long cage XT RD (have a long XTR one now) is not going to work with 105 sifters, and was advised to get a GRX group

My question is, please, what 11spd shifters, derailleurs should I buy so that they will work well with the above crank?
I'd be happy to have a cassette with even bigger cogs (36..40)

Thanks!!
J

Xt/XTR are mountain pull and 105 is road pull. What you need is a Wolftooth TanPan or a Jtek Shiftmate to translate the pull ratio between the two.

Search for Mullet Drivetrain on Google and you'll get many more results.

Base2 is correct above.

I ride this bike since Jan 2006 with road shifters and a rear XTR and it works well.

in the new components, this is not going to work, that is known. This is why I am trying to learn how to do it right

Yes you may have because 9 speed the pull ratios were the same and didn't change till 10 speed which they diverged and continued that trend because why not.

GRX would be your better bet for using STI levers with wider range cassettes or move to Gevenalle GX levers (assuming mechanical short pull braking) and then you can use an XT or XTR derailleur.

Thank you. Will GRX work with the Dura Ace 9000 50/34 crank ?

Thank you. Learning what this is :)

Depends on which specific GRX components you are talking about. If a GRX FDR, then I'd check the specs. But for a rear DR, probably not an issue. What matters for that crank is what the Chain Line of the rear is. And to a lesser extent that the front DR can work with the Chain Line that the crank is. Your DuraAce road crank is probably a 43.5mm chain line. So what is your rear wheel's cassette set up to handle? Probably about 43.5 on that old a frame. But I'm guessing.

You can check the compatibility between current Shimano components here....

As far as I know, GRX shifters are only available for hydraulic disc brakes. Does your bike have disc brakes? However 105 11 speed shifters will work with a GRX rear derailleur. A GRX front derailleur will not work with your Dura ace crank, due to chainline issues, but a 105 front derailleur will work with it. So, what you need is a pair of 105 11 speed shifters, a 105 front derailleur and a GRX rear derailleur

If the OP is sure that a 34T rear is big enough for the foreseeable future, the 11-speed 105 GS RD (RD-R7000-GS) would also be an option for mechanical shifting. They're still available, have 39T total capacity, and will handle an 11-34 rear cassette (might go a bit bigger, but you never know about that until you try). It would also have the aesthetic advantage of keeping shifters/derailleurs all 105.

I'd be happy to have a 36 cog and even a bigger one. I guess a longer cage is required
Should choose a rear D that will handle an 11-40T cassette
Thanks!

Hi, Is this the correct RD ? I am asking because it is for 1X11 - - does it work just as well in a 2x11 setup ?

Thanks!!

Thanks! I'll prefer to allow bigger cogs. like 40 or 42

base2 11-29-22 11:06 AM

All this talk of new derailleurs, GRX, etc...
I still don't understand why the $45 Wolftooth TanPan I suggested that works with his current and more capable parts inventory is being skipped over.

Can't say. But Shimano specifications say it's for 1x only and only has a 31T total capacity. An 11-42T cassette would use all of its capacity.

jeff3069 11-29-22 11:36 AM

Hi base2,
The XTR RD currently on the bike was used (not new) when I got this bike in Jan 2006 - it is 16-20 years old with not a single problem
I prefer to stick with shimano especially considering that I am not in the US and this Woiftooth product is unknown here, not to mention parts if needed

Iride01 11-29-22 12:03 PM

Shimano also says that RD-RX812 is only to be used with their ST-RX810 or ST-RX600 shifters. So take that into consideration too.
