2020 NorCal Fire Thread

August - Bay Area has been lucky up to now, but then the longest hottest heat wave in years plus lightening storms and fires all over the place.
Notably - east side of Mt. Diablo: Brentwood and Marsh Creek

I think there is or was one in the Morgan Hill area.

There's a couple in Napa area, one near Lake Hennessey, the other past Berryessa. Not noticing the smoke down here just yet.

Banxwondar 08-17-20 11:34 PM

I live at the base of Sierra road and drove up around to felter and caleveras yesterday. Big fire back near the resevoir around Welch road. We had ashes falling all day today.

We've got one closing in on us now. Generating my own power. Just waiting for the evacuation order. Lots of smoke and air traffic. PG&E won't repair our power line because it is in the fire zone. I assume it was caused by the lightning strorm (which is claimed to have spawned a rare local F0 tornado), but maybe they did it. Far too smokey to ride. Far too hot to ride. I don't think I have slept since 2:30 am Saturday.

Everything packed up, I hope? Good luck.

Now one in the Loma Mar/La Honda area by the coast.

Banxwondar 08-18-20 06:50 PM

Oh no! Old la Honda as well? Good amount of houses up that way

2cam16 08-18-20 08:17 PM

Looking bad here in the Peninsula. Within an hour we went from sunny to no sun and smokey. Looks like it's coming from the Napa and north fires.
Looks like no riding for me tomorrow. :(

Geez, it’s coming in quick from all corners of the Bay Area. I actually thought about riding Thursday, but the smoke in the air makes it highly questionable.

Hope they all can get some control over the fires. :(

Ugh, yeah. I tried to wait out the heat yesterday and went for a ride at six... only to find that it had quickly become crazy smoky. Probably shoulda just stayed home and smoked half a pack of cigarettes instead. This is in the hills between San Mateo/Burlingame and 280. There's a little ash dusting on my yard this morning, downtown San Mateo. My impression is that the sudden smokefest here is coming from the Loma Mar/La Honda area fires (the CZU August Lightening Complex, according to the Cal Fire designations listed in the link here.)

Stay safe everybody.

genejockey 08-19-20 09:17 AM

Aw, poop. No ride this morning.

Poor air quality escalated really quickly yesterday afternoon/evening. So bummed that I can't ride... Props to all the firefighters. Hope everyone stays safe.

genejockey 08-19-20 12:54 PM

According to "AirNow", we've been at around 160 since about 5 AM. It's hazy, but not even close to the hellscape that was November 2018.

I would've thought Napa Sonoma was worse.
Diablo still closed, I rode about 3 miles each way to have lunch with a friend. It's smoggy but you can't really tell where it's coming from... unlike last week when the Morgan Territory fire was lighting up the night.

genejockey 08-19-20 03:51 PM

The sky is blue in San Mateo, and the haze is largely gone. AirNow has us at "Unhealthy For Sensitive Groups", so I'mma go for a ride later.

paloaltan 08-19-20 03:57 PM

So... is it ok to ride with an N-95 mask on? Last night, I needed goggles to keep the ashes out of my eyes.

They're a chore to breathe through just standing still. But just imagine how strong your diaphragm will become!

genejockey 08-19-20 08:06 PM

I rode from Canada and 92 to Woodside and back. Air was nice and clear, breezy at the North end. But I could see the smoke from the Pescadero fire.

Got home and checked AirNow, and the situation was completely changed:

Just remember when you inhale, some of that is my house.

cthenn 08-20-20 10:09 AM

Ah hell, looks like many of us in the immediate Bay Area are going to be shut down from outdoor riding for the foreseeable future (at least without an N95, which probably takes it from 10 packs to 1 or 2 packs of cigs per ride...). Just awful this morning. The fires are only going to get worse, this will likely be like 2018 where most of the fires burned until the first rains...so, 3, 4 months? Ugh!

Sorry to hear that. I have a lot of friends up in Fairfield/Vacaville evacuated. That storm system sure came in at a bad time. They are looking at fog and increased westerly winds tomorrow.
