I saw someone on a unicycle today

Not really sure what else to add other than I thought it was really cool!

shafter 12-11-16 07:42 AM

Was he wearing spandex, clipless pedals and an aero helmet?

The Quiet One 12-11-16 07:45 AM

Probably skinny jeans and a neck beard.

Wait till you see one on a tough mountain bike trail. Blows your mind.

The person on the unicycle really loses its luster once you've seen someone on a penny farthing on the rail trail!

fietsbob 12-11-16 10:17 AM

was a piece on YT studded tire Uni rider commuting in the winter on an icy route.

Warm coat ( obviously) in suit & tie, had one of those Adult Post Grad jobs..

I knew a kid who used to ride one of the tall Schwinn unicycles to high school. He was about 6'4" and he was waaay up there.

Unicycles are extremely difficult to master. Try it.

Kedosto 12-11-16 06:04 PM

There's a guy in my neighborhood who walks his kid to school while riding a unicycle. He makes it look pretty easy, so I figured "why not." I picked mine up from a Berkeley college kid with an assortment of them. He asked me if I was sure I wanted to buy it about 5 times and I insisted.

I gave it a try a few times without much success. Then I got serious (determined) and spent MONTHS trying to make one complete pedal revolution. I just couldn't make it happen. After too many close calls and ugly falls I decided to give it to my nephew. He's 19, athletic, and can't get it to go either so I don't feel so bad.

It's much more difficult than it looks.

I have. But he wasn't in the technical section when I saw him.

Way back when I was a teen, parents had a boat in a slip (boat club) at the lake and one of the other members teenage son would ride his uni from the picnic tables where everyone congregated over to the community frig. (read keg) and poor a pitcher (without dismounting) and bring it back. And, this was not a paved area.

I had a similar experience. At about ten years old my sister got a unicycle. She tried it for ten seconds and abandoned it, permanently.

I gave it a shot. It was impossible. At the time, I had good bike handling skills. I could ride wheelies in circles, jump well, and I could sit on the handlebars and ride the bike backwards. But that unicycle? Forget it. I couldn't go twelve inches before rolling over forward or kicking the thing out in front of me. I just couldn't remain vertical and keep it under me.

We had a two rail fence in front of our house. I was able to use that as a guide, something to hold onto to help balance myself, like training wheels. Didn't help. I tried to ride that thing ALL DAY long, everyday, for the entire summer. The thing made me so mad. I just gave up once school started up again.

The next summer I found it buried in a corner of the garage with a flat tire. I decided to try again. Again I crashed 93 times per day, everyday, and was unable to even travel one crank revolution. I even enlisted buddies to hold my outstretched hands to help balance me. Just made it worse. This went on for months. Then in September it happened. It just clicked. I have no idea what I found, but it was IT. Dumb luck I guess or maybe the constant repetition. Within a day I was able to go up and down hills, make circles, and even go backwards with ease.

It was the second most difficult sporting/athletic thing for me to learn.

I refuse to talk about hitting a golf ball straight.

We have a guy here in the Boulder area we refer to as "Elliptigo Dude".
You don't laugh after the skinny basterd has dropped you a few times.

This photo was taken on Mt Evans, somewhere above 12,000' MSL.

Isn't that amazing, it must be some mental feet eye coordination thing, like those dudes who can shoot aspirin flying through the air with an arrow. Congrats for sticking at it long enough to crack it.

morgothaod 12-12-16 06:12 PM

He had no facial hair and no helmet. I saw another guy today on what basically was an electric unicycle. He just stood up and was able to move around. He had no helmet on as well.
