I rarely keep track of total mileage during or for the year. But today I realized I passed the 1,000 mile mark today. Not bad considering I haven’t been riding like normal. I’ll bet at least 3/4 of them have been touring miles. Makes me wonder what other years have been like.

The only time I’ve come close to seeing stars like that was after the first night of Cycle Oregon in 2002. We camped on a cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere in eastern Oregon. The campsite was maybe a mile off the highway. Dry and cold that night. (I woke up with ice on my tent poles.) The ride organizers suggested that, despite the cold, we stick our heads out of our tents to look at the sky. I had to take a leak in the middle of the night and did just that. Amazing. I didn’t want to go back in the tent, but the cold finally got to me.

Today I discovered that, even with a small Costco run thrown in, I can get to the city, do my errands, and get back home much more quickly and economically on public transportation. With the added bonus that I don't have to drive, or look for parking.

I was describing my criteria for a place to retire to Mrs. GeneJockey, and when I mentioned "Good public transportation", she said, "Why would I take public transportation?"

This is the woman who has declared she won't drive after mid afternoon, and that time keeps getting closer to the earliest she'll drive in the morning. So I'm not sure how she expects to get anywhere.

Obviously, she expects genejockey to chauffeur her outside that narrow time frame.

My wife also expresses a strong preference not to drive to the extent that I am or can be available to chauffeur her, despite we having bought her a more expensive car and her criticism of my driving.

Well, she thinks she can just take an Uber or Lyft, heedless of the finite nature of whatever our finances will be. I suspect she intends to peg out early, leaving me destitute and bereft.

Horrific crash at turn 1 that brought a red flag full stop on the track. At the same time, and not knowing of the crash, protestors got over the fence on the opposite side of the track to sit in a row across the track. Their plans were totally screwed up by the crash.

You just have to convince her of the truism that millennials are not at all interested in learning to drive (due to the lack of an app which teaches driving), so the pool of semi-competent drivers willing to driver for Uber and Lyft is diminishing, but AutoPilot is not quite up to snuff yet. Most likely only the "sooner" part. Generally, only the named plaintiff(s) and their counsel get "richer" after a class action lawsuit. The rest get an insignificant sum and/or a voucher for future products to the extent that the defendant does not declare bankruptcy.

You don’t do a class action. Those are for chumps.

You sue Tesla for wrongful death as the surviving spouse (make sure you are really married). You and your lawyer get rich.

This course of action is premised on the presumption that one can afford counsel who is willing and able to litigate effectively over the course of a lengthy civil suit against the legions of attorneys which Tesla will deploy to defend such a case. In which case, one is already rich, and can easily afford a chauffeur for one's spouse.
