Bottom Bracket caged bearing orientation
 
I think I put these in in the wrong direction. When I rode the bike a couple times the crank loosened up on me some.
so which photo show the side that should be facing the cup? Thanks

An eleven ball retainer installs with the open face facing inward; a nine ball retainer installs with the open face facing outward.

They can if you drop them. I'm still looking for one out of a vintage NOS Shimano hub I cleaned and re-packed a couple of weeks ago. :)
