40.5 @15.1

Doctor Morbius 12-21-17 08:09 PM

20 minutes on the indoor trainer, which translates to a paltry 5 miles on a very average day using a real bike outside.

I have a theory that my CycleOps Fluid 2 somehow creates a gravity well which surrounds the bike and user thus slowing time to a crawl. The more I use it, the more time slows down. An hour seems almost infinite.

PdalPowr 12-21-17 08:31 PM

How fer?

I rode the sofa over to the remote to change the television station.
.5 meters and no bunny hopping necessary.:)

deex 12-27-17 06:32 AM

100.4 miles on Christmas Day. I have to complete 4K miles before the end of the year. I should be done with today’s 26 mile gravel ride.

OldTryGuy 12-27-17 06:54 AM

106 miles yesterday after a failed attempt at 100 miles on Christmas eve into Christmas day because I wound up heading out a little late and weather got colder and more humid than expected making riding unpleasant. Finished with 72 miles for the PM/AM ride.

6 miles, in 8F temps with a -3F wind chill. I gave up after one loop, need better gloves, or more likely bar mitts :/

First of all, what's that all over the ground? And those numbers can't be temperatures, they don't make any sense. ;)

70.3 miles @ 19.3mph, by the time I got home at 1pm, it was 81ºF.

Rapha Festive progress: 288 of 500km, 4 days to go.

Do you prefer -13C air temp? And just think of all that white stuff as one excellent excuse for N+1 :P

But seriously I far prefer 8F to 81F anyday. Basic Nashbar bibs, long sleeve jersey, Specialized softshell and uninsulated Red Wing boots with wool socks and I was quite toasty. Just gotta solve the cold hands, think my compression SealSkinz gloves are a bit snug.

That's insane.

Though I guess your 8ºF is the inverse equivalent of our 110ºF.

I don't do heat. The compromise on my tropical wedding was that it had to be in "winter" so I'd be less miserable. Above 80, I'm not amused getting on a bike, above 90, I pretty much only do it if I've already paid for some organized event. My sweet spot is in the 60s.

DrIsotope 12-27-17 09:15 PM

If I only rode when the temps were below 80º, I could ride about 3 months a year. We have days in the summer where the overnight low is around 80º.

deex 12-27-17 10:47 PM

I can ride a century in 100+ degrees. I did the Key Largo to Key West century in May and I think the temp was 102 under the sun. Screw that winter noise. I can cool down really easily, I can’t warm up at all, specially if I get wet. #lowbodyfat

19.5 miles this morning.. More climbing, and a group ride (33.5) where I got dropped after the first 5 miles. I was averaging 18, but they, 20. Uggh.

one4smoke 01-01-18 04:33 PM

10.5 miles in 19° (-3° wind chill) weather.

I have a great respect for those that ride all the time in these temps.

Well, I got back on my bike today, for the first time in about 2 months. A long story, but I'll forego that.
I didn't go but 6 miles along the Salem Riverside greenway. I enjoyed the ducks, the scenery, the river (frozen along the banks), and just getting outdoors for a while. (I'm 79)

Hope, after all the winter ails, sicknesses, just blahs, to make it more regular. I'm going back to riding on the greenway that runs by the hospital in Roanoke, because I think it is easier for them to take me in when I wreck. (guess you can tell I still haven't gotten over my wreck that almost fixed me over a year ago - mentally I think it will take a while.) Anyway, just thought I would check in. My cutoff, temperature is 45 degrees, so today was borderline, and I wore a lot of clothes, but it was still pretty chilly. Rain is now in the forecast for the next 2 days. Oh, shucks!

Maelochs 01-11-18 06:02 AM

I have seen some absolutely gorgeous riverbank scenery in Virginia. Glad to hear you are out enjoying it.

35 mile ride Ventura to Ojai, CA. It was my first ride up that way since the recent Ventura fires went thru there. It was spooky riding up the Ojai bike trail with lots of burned areas alongside, as well as several charred fence posts. The burned out RV and trailer was really amazing. Never seen anything like that. If you look closely, there is a torched mountain bike on the fence. There was more damage further along the road, but these pictures are all along the bike trail which runs parallel to Highway 33. All in all, a good ride, mid 60s, not much wind, but a sobering sight seeing all the burned vegetation. the group shot is our Channel Islands Bike Club at the Foster Park regroup.

one4smoke 01-22-18 09:25 AM

21.1 miles @13.5 mph due to terrible greenway conditions.

one4smoke 01-26-18 10:09 PM

36.5 on a cool, windy day!

ccinnz 01-27-18 05:10 AM

30 miles in 90'degree heat with high humidity. 1000 metres of elevation gain with a 10 mile grade 2 climb...
after 3/4 of a bottle of red the night before and on an empty stomach!
Not my smartest move and required a bit of a lie down after.
Cycle was through the Waitakere ranges in West Auckland, New Zealand.

22 km yesterday, road ride. Doesn't seem like much. But, it was the 27th of January in Quebec and it is a record early start for me; I figured +5C and nearly dry roads, why the heck not? I used the mountain bike as the roads are really gritty and salty. I have been dealing with a nasty bout of sciatica in my left leg for the last couple of months, and was doing a lot of indoor spinning to deal with it. It helped, but this was a real ride on a real road with real hills (up to 15%). I was nervous about how my leg would react, but I went up OK and felt really good on the bike, and it really helped, a lot. Moreover, my speeds were comparable to my first ride last year on my cross bike, which was on the 25th of February. I was slightly faster yesterday on the climbs, slightly slower overall.

So I'm relieved that my cycling season won't be ruined, and by the fact that cycling actually helps. But now we're back to our regularly scheduled cold weather.

This early start has me thinking maybe a fat bike for next year!

Yes, my hair is a bit out of control...

General Geoff 02-20-18 05:38 PM

Took advantage of the 60 degree weather today. 38 miles with about 2,000 feet of climbing throughout. Took about 3 hours rolling time.
