I had a good ride today. Rode from Asheville up to Mt Mitchell and back. It was fun, and not too flat!

If I lived in your area I would want a fat bike for the snow. I rode my mountain bike in the snow quite a bit when I lived in the mountains. It was fun, depending on conditions, of course.

Kudos on an epic, gravel-free ride. Pics?

Gross. Why would anyone live in such a place?

I went to a front suspension, then a better suspension, then a full suspension bike in 1998. Broke that bike in 2008 and got a better full squish then in 2018 bought an enduro type bike which has more suspension than my first motorcycle.

Now thinking about a "gravel" bike seems like regressing. No suspension, smaller tires, and less capable than my mtb has me concerned. I have joined a gravel ride with my mtb and it's a disadvantage on smooth climbs and road sections, for sure. Around here there are dirt roads which can be linked with road sections. Group rides with no cars sounds pretty appealing. I have better photos at home.

I have ridden this road in MT fully loaded three times. It's a fun ride with some ups and downs and free range cattle.

Here are a couple of your bear friends!

They were hanging out on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I stayed about 200 feet away and waited about 5 minutes for them to walk into the woods.

The pavement on that section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is PERFECT. No gravel.

How many miles were you on it? Looks a little washboardy. When we went across country in 1990 we did a few dirt roads. I had a Nishiki Seral touring bike with 32s at the start but had to buy a 28 on the road because that's what I could get when the rear tire wore through. The dirt roads were not planned but weren't a problem.

Did you look westward to the Great State of Tennessee, like Moses looking to the promised land from Mount Nebo?

It's about 20 miles. Washboards in some places. There was bear rock for a short stretch. Some of it is on BLM land, hence the cattle.

The last time I rode it I stopped at one spot and realized that I could not hear any manmade sounds. Only the wind rustling the grasses, birds and insects buzzing. Maybe 4 cars total in three rides. None the last time.

Will this make me a faster cyclist?

I'm planning to get an R8000 one, but I haven't decided between 52/36 and 53/39. SO I'm going to see how I like 53/39 x 11-32, compared to the 52/36 x 11-34 on the Canyon.

Dry air, lots of sun, excellent quality of life outside of the cold. Would you rather have a sauna outside 8 “”eight months a year?

Not sure what you mean by sauna, but I wish summer here lasted eight months, instead of three.

You can move to Texas. Lots of people do. It’ll challenge your notions about prehydrating though

Bah Humbug 05-02-22 01:23 PM

AG was supposed to take a short trip home tomorrow during her unemployment, but we got the cal yesterday that her mother got Covid by not masking while the guy was fixing cabinets (prolly). A day after her second booster, which of course didn’t help her yet.

One of my mother’s friends, too. She’s finally internalizing why I want her to mask in the stores.

As you know, gearing is very personal. I am a convert to compact gearing, and am running 50/34 and 11-28 on the Habanero.

I was a fool in my 20’s and ran 53/42 and 13-21. I shudder today at the idea of going up a 15% climb in a 42 x 21 but somehow did it BITD.
