Paint peeling off and rust appearing

Hi, I was wondering if somebody could advice on this.

The paint of my bike is coming off the frame and rust immediately appears. That’s happening every time I lock it.

My two main questions are: 1. How do I effectively remove rust from the frame and 2. How do I prevent paint from peeling off and rust from coming back?

Many thanks

I guess you could try stripping all the paint off, sanding it down, and repainting it, with a 2K clear on top. But for a really robust paint job that withstands being knocked around and bashed with locks and things you really need a powder coat which you could get done professionally. Could also look into "cerakoting". The only way to stop it rusting is to have some kind of decent paint or powder coat on it.

Sounds like there's rust developing under the paint and cracking the paint off. Does that seem right?

you might be right actually. I bought the bike 5-6 months ago. The frame could be late 80’s but i don’t know if and how many times was repainted over (the logos and decals still there).

Here’s a pic of it

Good picture and it's not near what I was thinking; where lots of the paint is getting pushed away from the frame by rust, typically in a wrinkled pattern. Those look more like dings rather than a bike that lived in a beach town.

I would use naval jelly on the spots and touch up with a silver paint pen.

thanks for the advice. That is on the localised spots after I removed the rust I suppose?

Yes, just on the spots. The naval jelly (Loctite Rust Dissolver) will stop the rusting process.

Apply rustol on the spots then cover these rust spots with nail polish
