the thing is, landis has no proof other than his word. meanwhile he is going up against the core of the old guard of american cycling. one convicted doper vs. the heroes of american cycling and the lance armstrong machine will not end well. i wouldn't be surprised if landis is telling the truth, but his credibility is shot after taking people's money to defend himself and his tour title. plus, i am sure that this is coming as a prelude to an upcoming book. everything about this is an unfortunate situation.

Sounds bitter.

cccorlew 05-20-10 12:01 AM

I wonder if they're really his emails. I've always believed he was set up. If this turns out to be true I may have to give up watching pro cycling. I mean, Big George too?
I'm, perhaps foolishly, hoping this is all a fraud.

Other than possible redemption by some of the more publicly vocal Lance skeptics, such as Paul Kimmage and the nation of France, this is going to be a lose/lose situation for the Pro cycling world.

His "everybody did it" makes him sound like a whacko. He knows that everybody did it because what, they confided in him?

If he thinks his situation is bad now, wait till he hears from his current team re next year's contract.

Sorry, but

Anyway, I don't see how this changes anything. None of what Landis says there is surprising, but even if Landis were no such a discredited liar, it's just his word, he doesn't have any proof. And the UCI can't ban someone just based on someone else's statement.

coasting 05-20-10 12:47 AM

I have floyd on ignore, you should too.

383 05-20-10 12:50 AM

Lance isn't doping.

bmw5nkj 05-20-10 12:53 AM

Great, now he's trying to accuse of every American rider of doping. I had faith in Landis, but if those emails were really from him, I can only feel sorry for him.

Super Guanche 05-20-10 12:59 AM

I guess it was only a matter of time before Landis came clean.

gsteinb 05-20-10 01:00 AM

not sure I follow

you had faith in is innocence, you mean?

if that's the case...why would you feel sorry for him?

HigherGround 05-20-10 01:01 AM

This quote from the ESPN article was particularly note worthy:

Landis, who began his career as a top mountain biker, had kept detailed training journals since he was a teenager. He said he continued the same methodical record-keeping once he started using banned drugs and techniques.
It will be fascinating to see how much of his record keeping matches up with other things that could be verified (travel, money transfers, etc). I doubt that he would have kept fictitious records for years, in anticipation of making false accusations years later, especially considering how damaging they would be if they were inadvertently found by an outside party. On the other hand, he had his book and on-line campaign detailing his "innocence", so he has clearly been lying somewhere along the line.

If it's true, I'm extremely disappointed over all, but I give him credit for having the guts to come forward. You know he's going to get a lot of backlash for this, particularly from Armstrong. If it's not true, then he deserves the **** storm that's coming his way. The next few months (at least) will be very interesting.
