Pie filling also uses a starch - like corn or tapioca starch - to thicken so the bloobs don't just roll all over the plate, out from under the crust. Nobody really likes watery pie.

Yikes! MRSA is no joke. My Dad got it once in his knee after a cortisone shot, and was in the hospital for some time with IV antibiotics.

My Dad made maple syrup once, from one of the regular old maple trees in the yard. Didn't get a lot, since apparently you have to boil away 97% of the sap you collect. He let me have a teaspoon of it.

A couple friends of mine make maple syrup every year and I get a bottle or two as an annual gift. There used to be quite a bit of it in my area but it seems to be dwindling.
