Is that a chart for 32 or 36 hole wheels? I'm trying to build a 36 hole GH6 to Westrick/Supraseal for a 1974 bike.

Yes, that would be a 32/40 chart. It makes me wonder if there would be a difference?

Would some of the krazy stuff be making parts like that for others? I have a 1935 Roadster that is nearing completion- something like that would be a fun touch!

IMO, any decent chain like KMC or Bell (at a big box store is likely a KMC) should work for you. Save the old chain. It may be useful, and you can count the number of links that are needed.

Oh, make sure you buy the correct width - 1/8".

I honestly don't know if it's a substantial difference. I've never seen a chart that definitively says "use these for 36 holes", which leads me to wonder if they just kept using the same spokes for the front wheels when they converted from 32 to 36 holes. I imagine you would have different lengths for the back when they went 40 x4 to 36 x3, but that's another subject. The only difference for the front is the number of spokes goes from 32 to 36. Cross pattern, hub, rim, all the same. Leads me to wonder if I couldn't use the chart as a starting point and just go a size or two up or down...

Apparently the 32/40 with X3/X4 was engineered to accommodate one spoke size. You may have to do the measuring up just to be sure.

I'll pull out the calipers and see what I can do by way of measurements. I actually have two Dynohub front wheels to build this fall/winter - a standard 32 hole and the oddball 36 hole. I've also got another set of Schwinn 3 speed wheels to build using parts I have around. I rebuilt several boxes of hubs last winter, I guess I'm building wheels next... It's never done.

I know heresy... but my pick for a 1/2"X1/8" chain would be a nice IZUMI. Ran them through the ringer in my BMX days. And they look the part with no shaped plates or bubbled out plates.

I had a 700c wheel built around an FM Hub. I think I posted photos maybe a year ago.

I haven’t been able to ride much this past year. Today I took it out, and noticed gear noise in Normal gear to the point it drowned out the pawl clicking. All the gears work and the other three sound OK. If the gears are loud when they are just idling is that a bad sign for the hub. It seemed to quiet down after I rode a few miles.

^ Ooh, those dual shift levers are a rare find.

Look for a 1/8" chain with bushed pins. It will last a lot longer than the bushingless stuff that seems to be all that the bike shops near me stock. You can still get bushed chain from any industrial supplier, or buy/find a chain from a garage door opener. It is long enough to do 4 or 5 bikes, and even one taken from a discarded unit will have little to no wear.

I would like to know more about industrial chains that are compatible with bicycles, 1/2 x 1/8 and 1/2 x 3/32.

What a nice bicycle. That Humber is really eye-catching - pray what blue is this? Original? I am considering an enamel job for my '51 Sun Wasp with white piping, similar to this colour but a tad darker.

I run an Izumi 1/8 with my '53 Sturmey FW four speed on the '51 Sun Wasp. The chain packing oil even smells good. It works really well - better than any other chain I've found locally, and its black which feels more true to the period.

The Humber was painted by me with Tremclad (Rustoleum for the US folks) spray for the frame and brushed on for the chainguard; Deep Blue I think it’s called. Pretty close to the original blue that was still visible on the bike though badly flaked off and failing.

When I bought the hub, I removed the cones and driver, resurfaced the cones, filled the hub with SAE30, regreased the bearings with Phil wood grease, and put it back together. I know I had the wheel built during the pandemic. By the time I finished the build, I was basically unable to ride. I am just now getting out now maybe 5 miles at a pop.

I will shoot some oil in before I ride it again.
