How much is that Merz in the window….

Don’t know if any of you have made deals with the significant others, or even a promise to yourself.

my deal is: if I sell 3, I’m allowed to buy 1.

Found this pink Merz for sale down here. Kooky placement for the rear brake and all.

my question is: does a Tandem count as a single or two?

I argue 2 since two seat posts, two cranks, etc….

can I get a ruling?

Speaking of Kooky… what is that brakeset?

Schweinhund 05-29-23 06:33 AM

How many wheels and how many sets of derailleurs? It's one bike.

WOW, that Merz is amazing.
I'm in the "a tandem is worth 2" camp.
It takes up the space of a small car
Good luck.

Rules? That's gotta be the dumbest thing I heard about C&V.

And that Shimano sticker has to go.

This pink AX bike wasn't the one I made for Shimano. It was for Kim Bushong, a Triathlete who got 11th place in the 1981 Ironman. This bike was for the 1982 race, where he only got 22rd. I gave him the bike, he never even said thanks. Many years later he tried to sell it back to me! What a jerk. How did this bike end up back in Portland? I found the build sheet for the bike. What a jerk, dang man that's low.

Hey Jim, at what point was it decided that the OP bike would receive the chainstay brake? I didn't see a spec on the layout.

Portlandjim 05-29-23 09:10 AM

I normally would not need details like the brake position on the build sheet, for bikes like this it was up to me. Jim

Portlandjim 05-29-23 09:15 AM

The pink Merz with blue bar tape is a different bike than the OP. No lugs! The blue tape bike was made for Shimano's display at the bike show. Jim

Tandem=2Xbike. That's just basic math.

Of course a Merz is worth 3 of your average high-end bikes, but I'm not telling your wife that ;)

FWIW, it is a great looking frameset! I've really come around to liking pink bikes, although I still prefer purple.

I saw what I think was one of your track bikes at the Chicago Winter Bike Swap maybe 2-3 years ago. I'm far from an expert on track bikes, but it was amazing how little tire clearance there was. The bike was definitely a work of art and likely a great performer. I hope the buyer took it back out for some rides.

Beautiful Merz it is! I would accept the argument of a tandem as two but that is irrelevant. Everyone who read your post already knows your SO will not accept it. I’ll give you credit for a nice try though.

Robvolz 05-29-23 10:58 AM

Hey all, I’m not currently in the state of Oregon.

the bike in question is in a non-oregon bike shop.

just a few more “tandem = 2 bike votes and it’s mine.

Jim…i have seen Colnagos with the rear brake down there. I would think it would get dirtier faster. Plus more difficult to inspect/adjust

Is there an engineering advantage to having it on the chain stay bridge?

also, I promise I’ll never try to sell it to you.

Robert

Get the Merz, then work it out with the SO. Sometimes it's easier to obtain forgiveness than permission, and you will never see another bike like it.

As a bonus, you have the provenance direct from the builder's mouth here on C&V. When was the last time Ernesto or Ugo chimed in to tell us about one of their bikes? Okay, bulgie and Dave Kirk have treated us to some great posts, and Bruce Gordon once confirmed his serial number system, but you get the idea.

jdawginsc 05-29-23 11:08 AM

It’s a really nice frame...it needs no justification!

Wildwood 05-29-23 11:14 AM

:)
Tandem is a bike.
Single is 1/2 bike.
Makes N+1 2X as nice (for most of us).

This bike does not fall in any compromise category, no rules apply, this is the pure definition of "BUY IT NOW".:eek:

SoccerBallXan 05-29-23 12:55 PM

ThatShimano sticker stays. The bike is so untouched I would be scared to take the original dust layer off of it.

This is an amazing bicycle. If I knew the location it wouldn't be in a bike shop anymore, it would be in my bike stand. ;)

Go out and get this immediately (sell an organ if you need).

BTW, a tandem is two bikes! It needs two riders!

himespau 05-29-23 01:01 PM

Buying: Tandem is one bike
Selling: Tandem is two bikes

Isn't that the rule that we all know? I think it might be engraved in stone somewhere.

Tandem, 2 riders, takes 2 bikes to replace, tandem = 2X, period.
