Another Delmarvalous springlike day. Took my Orbea Avant out today, 25 miles. I have a V-O Porteur bar on it now, love the set up on this bike. I put a pair of GK semi-slick, 28mm, on the bike. I like these a lot, really good for multi-surface rides, still pretty good ride on pavement. Bethany Beach had a lot of people on both the boardwalk and the beach. Ocean was like blue tinted glass, we rarely see it like that in March.

Well today's ride was only supposed to be 10 miles as I haven't ridden in two weeks due to traveling back to Michigan, and babysitting the grandkids. The weather was a bit chilly at 38 f degrees, though the skies were partly sunny with low winds. Anyway, I headed out and made what I thought would be a good route. But when I got to the road that would turn me around it had a very long train across it. So I had to change my plan and went to another road which the train was across. I went to another way but got mixed up and thought I was somewhere else, so I back tracked to my original ride and ended up with a 20 mile ride today. So it was a good day!

And people wonder why we ride with GPS devices

Your bike looks right at home there.

My ride yesterday was unremarkable, rode around our suburban area but the wind was persistently +15mph. And of course, it seemed the entire time I was riding into it. Anyway, I like to take a dirt path around a small lake. I stopped to take a picture of my bike, but a blue heron flew into view and settled into the water about 20 ft ahead of me. I steathily moved up and just watched. After standing still for maybe 2 minutes, the heron started hunting; one leg very slowly raised and moved forward, eased into the water, wait, next leg. It then shot its head and a large part of its body into the water, and came up with a fish. Then it stood there for maybe 90 seconds as the fish squirmed in its beak, finally swallowing the fish. The heron then fluffed up its feathers, spread its wings, and resumed the hunting pose. I really should have used video, but for me - this was quite the sight regardless and I was maybe 8 ft away from it.

Rode the Tucson Loop today, 56 mostly flat miles, in freshening wind which helped on the last leg. A geezer group I meet on Tuesdays and Fridays is talking about riding that again tomorrow. If so, I'll do it again, but sucking a wheel at the back of the pack.

Haven’t been able to get out for the past week and a half due to wind and cold. Sunny and 48 today and thought I’d give it a go. After eight miles I shut it down. The 15mph wind with 25mph gusts got old. The wind has been brutal lately. It’s got such a cold bite to it. Better weather around the corner I’m sure.

Cheers,

Scott

I grabbed the 730 Multitrack that I just built up and rode just shy of 10 miles on the Ohio To Erie Trail. Other than a bit more wind than I expected, the sunny and 60 was great. I would have gone further but the saddle I have on the bike is not working for me.

Rode the electric bike, 20 miles according to my watch. Only burned 1200 cal! Not fair. Was able to ride far without draining all of my energy.

Got up this morning earlier than usual. Siri said it was 65, Alexa said it was 70 and I said it was good enough for a spin through the neighborhood.

80km across Tokyo, out to the river. 20km to get to the river, 40km along the river, then 20km to get home. I had a strong headwind the entire way along the river, or I wouldn’t feel as tired as I do right now, I stopped at McDonald’s and treated myself to a double cheeseburger combo with a large cola. I wanted to get in a long ride today as it looks like it will rain from tomorrow through Saturday.

I hope to be in shape to get in a ride to the mountains in Nagano, another ride to a seaside hot spring resort in Izu, and, god willing, a ride across Hokkaido in late July.

Finally....10.5 miles today. Prettiest day of the spring so far.
Crazy weather keeping me off the bike lately. Plus needing to saw up blown down trees in my woods. Ugh.....

I met my old friend Dave from Phoenix yesterday for a ride through Tucson. Dave is 77, and can still ride a multi-day tour from Phoenix to Patagonia AZ. He's staying in motels. I rode 20+ miles across town to meet him at his motel in the morning, rode about 20 miles south through Tucson with him, with a couple of bakery stops, then finished a loop home for 55 flat miles.

Dave's one of the most effective people I've ever met. After Vietnam-era Army service (MP in Germany), he made a career in public housing with the City of Phoenix, marked with several important milestones. Then he volunteered to help build the Arizona Trail, became executive director, and presided over completion of the trail in 2012. I met him then as a new trail volunteer, ten years his junior. We connected at one of the final work events one weekend in Flagstaff, which I cycled 110 miles to from my house in Prescott. We started cycling together, and I helped him run a bicycle recycling program at the large St Vincent de Paul operation in Phoenix (800+ bikes/year). Pretty much everything he's done has improved the world. I can't think of a better role model.

Paddled along a flat route in Watopia while watching Paris Roubaix. Mathieu VDP is in some kind of form right now. Amazing.

Got around the neighborhood for 16 miles. Beautiful day but wind, wind, wind. Hoping to get outside the neighborhood soon and take some interesting pics.

Cheers,

Scott

Go Padres!

pepperbelly 04-08-24 05:02 PM

Got out this afternoon after the eclipse to ride around a local lake. It’s only about 6 miles per loop so I did 2 laps- one in each direction.
I didn’t buy my new kit for this but I liked wearing my new Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon bibs and jersey after a total eclipse.
It’s been windy lately now that it’s warmed up. 15-20mph I can deal with but gusts over 30 or 40mph are a big nope!

pelirary 04-09-24 03:11 PM

over 70 degrees

The temperature went over seventy today so how could I not get out to ride. With all the rain and wind over the past couple weeks it was nice to be on the Trek AL 5 instead of my 1997 Trek 1220 on the trainer. I don't think I shocked anyone with my white arms and legs, but made sure to put on my sunscreen, even though it is only April. Since it has been a few weeks since I have been outside I picked a route with only one short hill and ended up doing twenty one miles. Rest of the week is rain again so back on the trainer for my next ride.
