Shoe Color.. Does it matter?

I am curious about the choosing of shoe colors. I personally ride with white shoes for one simple reason, they were on sale for a song. Mine have seen their better days so I was trying on some new ones at Performance the other day. I heard another patron talking to his buddy while they were trying on shoes. One of them stated that they never ride with black shoes because we live in Florida and they get too hot. Has anybody else found this to be true?
As a runner, I have always worn colored shoes. I grew up in Florida and played H.S. and College Tennis and wore colored shoes. I have never heard that they make a difference as far as the heat goes.
Sorry for the lame thread but I am a few weeks out of hip surgery so I can't run or ride and these things stand out for now. Personally, I do not pay much attention to the shoe that I wear. I just go with the best shoe for a great price. If it was pink, and it was cheaper, I would probably buy them.

I've always had black shoes; never had trouble with hot feet.

My wife has the MAVIC bright yellows w/ carbon soles; a little too much for me...

I do black. No reason why.

RPK79 12-07-15 02:53 PM

I like black shoes because I always wear black bibs (NOT SHORTS) so they always match.

Black is classic.

The only time I had an issue with black shoes was that time this little cartoon mouse lit a match under my foot at a rest stop.

But seriously, if they were well made and well ventilated shoes, color shouldn't matter as much. If they were black leather uppers with almost no perforation, then yes, white would probably be a little cooler. My Giro Prolights are black and the only time I noticed any issues with heat was on a 100+ degree day, and it was actually my soles that were on fire because I work socks with a thick bed and they were trapping lots of heat.

I bought my shoes for the same reason as OP - on sale. I also grew up in Florida and can't remember shoe color affecting my feet. Sounds like someone is coming up with something else to worry/obsess about it.

If you're a spinner you should probably go with red shoes though.

I got these because they fit and were on sale, and I was in a hurry.

My girlfriend's friend Emily came over one day while I was getting ready to go out and ride. She looked at them and said "those are either pimp shoes or bike shoes." That's why colors matter.

A man after my own heart. I also played HS tennis and ran x-country, but was an avid biker too.

Get better ASAP!

I actually like the 171. I wanted the black pair but couldn't find a good sale. I know you said you only got them because they were on sale, but what are your thoughts on them so far?

79pmooney 12-07-15 03:32 PM

Black ... because once upon a time, the rules said black and once up on a time the thinking was that black stayed looking good because, well it was black and most of the indignities that happen to shoes leave dark marks. And if you really want to spiff them up, black polish on (leather) black shoes always works. Black paint also works.

I agree. Since red bikes are faster, it would only make sense that red shoes are also faster - although you might have some issues dealing with the Wicked Witch of the West.

If you watch the major Tours, you rarely see black. White, yellow, bright green, orange, and pink are the new colors.

The correct response is: "The only reason you'd know that is if you're either a hooker, or a bicyclist. In either case, I'm pleased to make your acquaintance".

Got white shoes once. Never again, only black for me. And it's a myth that the color black makes you hotter. It doesn't. Of course that subject turns into BF drama so I'll leave it alone. Got these a few weeks ago on sale, pretty snazzy glossy black.

Yeah, but they're matching their shoes to their kit and bike. I don't have a closet full of matching kit so I keep my shoes a neutral color so they go with all my jerseys.

Except that they're not very attractive, and kidn of basic (no boa or anything) I don't have anything bad to say about them. They're comfortable, stiff, fit well, and they've held up to about 3,000 miles. The way the black and white sections come together it slightly weird but it works fine.

I got a laugh with "they're both. You have my money, right?"

I get whatever color Sidi uses for its women's shoes when I need a new pair.

Kind of off topic/on topic, but ever since wearing my Giro Prolights, which only have velcro, ratcheting straps and boa almost seem gimmicky to me. They're super comfy and it's one less thing to break or damage in a fall.

Dave Cutter 12-07-15 04:31 PM

I match up cycling shoes with cycling socks. So.... if I switched from my black shoes to white shoes.... I'd need to buy some white socks too.

Blue Giro Empires
Blue Shimano R320
White Giro Republic
Camo Giro Empire
Reflective Giro Empire

My shop is getting pink Sidi's in spring, they're next on the list.

Haha. Be like SpeshulEd and you wont have a problem.

Well unless pink clashes with your bike

Same here. Got the white 170's for a song. And I really like them. The blacks were not on sale. The only issue I've had with them is when someone on a group ride didn't stop when I did and ran over my foot, thus breaking a ratchet. $20 and a philips-head screwdriver and I was back in business.
