Well, not all of them were. This bike's head badge says made in England, it seems to have a SA hub and still, the long aluminum tip on the front fender.

This is what makes these British bikes classic, the fact they they were so widely emulated across the planet.

Some of the higher end Japanese bicycles used SA hubs as did most upscale makers because they were recognized as being better, Suntour sold SA hubs under license as well.

I looked at a 3 speed a few weeks ago that appeared to be British but turned out to be a Suntour SA hub. I passed.

What's the significance of the Rudge Hand?

It is an SA hub, just branded Suntour.

A lot of my spare SA parts that I picked up from various shops came in packages marked Suntour... for a while many local shops were getting rid of their SA parts and quite a few gave them to me.

Same thing happened with my cog boards.

It is good to know people and now those shops send business to me when it comes to SA hub service and custom freewheels.

I have not researched this, but as a Brit, the Red Hand relates to Ulster.
Has political connotations hereabouts, perhaps.....

I just picked up an NOS Suntour 3 speed set up. Looks very much like SA made and the pulley wheel is even labeled SA.

One thing missing is the trigger shift. Crowd tells me a SA will shift it also. Would be nice to find one eventually to match the Suntour hub but I can make due for now.

I found this at a bike show and swap meet on the front lawn of the Lars Anderson Transportation Museum in Brookline, Mass. a few years ago. It was completely disassembled and the parts were spread out on a blanket behind a vendors tent. Many of the small parts were packed into a cake box from Hoff's Bakery in Medford. As I carried the box to my car I could hear the ball bearings rolling around on the cardboard. Although mostly complete, it was missing the pedals, chain, tire inflator, and kit bag. The paint, box lining, and chrome are very good, but I suspect someone tried to pressure wash it and spoiled some of the decals

Based on how much it would cost to tool up to produce what was a smaller number of hubs and components, I'd say that most of the complex parts were made in England and then sent to Japan for assembly.

Some of the simpler internal parts would have been easier to produce than others so there is probably some local content as well.

As it is, Suntour 3 speed hubs are not very common at all.
