As soon as the company announced the bonus money my car blew up, so we are down to one car.

My car will cost about 2000 to fix, but it’s not worth 1500. I don’t think I can trade in a broken car.

My wife just needs to decide what’s important to her. Not having a car payment or having something better than basic. She deserves more than basic but she’s also in charge of the money situation and knows what gets paid when and where. I’m a bystander.

I want her to be happy, and not to have buyer remorse, and if the cost to have what she wants is 6 thousand more, I think she should do it.

I understand but maybe think as hard how to make it work another way and you might find a solution. It's sounds like you don't use your car much. Just a thought. More free advice...

Did you guys try the outback? I’m a big Subie fan

I've heard they burn oil like Willie Nelson burns the cannabis weed. According to my brother who has one and is a mechanic.

Before I Switched companies I wouldn’t have needed a car, but once I start actually flying I will have to have a car.

Plus I want to drive back to dallas this time around. I won’t have time to fly home, and 4 weeks with out car access is a long time.

i think that’s true of the early-mid 2010s models, the 2020+ Outback’s have a new engine IIRC

You get a lot of safety stuff standard on even the base Outback.

I like the look of the outback. Fairly roomy and bike friendly and that's all that matters.
i.e. Nothing else matters.

The CRV is as ubiquitous here as the VW bug was a few years ago. Granted, they are made here, and are less expensive than in the US. It would be plenty car for me, but I'm not a middle class American wife.
But our daughter is and she has a new one. Nice car.

The lots here, well we don't really have lots, so it's hard to tell. We have showrooms and the lots are somewhere else. But the showrooms are full and the sales staff is sitting at the desk with no customers every time I'm in there. I guess that could mean they have nothing to sell.

When the supercharged Corvettes first came out, our dealer sold several for MSRP + $35K.

Kia Tellurides we’re going 5k over MSRP here the first 6-9 months they were out.

I just wrote another lame reply and chose to not post it. I'm sorry to read of your car buying woes. Does Toyota have anything interesting? I would advise against the Avanza (that might be a Mexico only model)

Its probably the direction I’ll go unless I get an EV. Have my eye on the VW Id.4 and Q4 eTron, both have about the same cargo room as the Outback and w/ tax credit + NY direct rebate that’s like 10k off the top.

Busy morning for a Saturday. Must be wintertime.

I had a 1995 Legacy wagon that was a lease and it didn't burn oil. We only put 60K miles on it, though. We could put 2 bikes in the back, stacked with a blanket between them. Great car in the snow. Main problem I had with it is the seat didn't go back far enough. I think that is typical of Subarus and if I would have kept the car I would have tried to modify the seat track for more room.

We got a stern warning from Chevrolet to stop doing that. They'll still do it sometimes.

It’s not like you’d be losing the $6k. Keep in mind the markup on those is only about a few thousand. It’d be very hard to get $5k off of a $30k vehicle. Unless it’s an unpopular car that is not selling and they are trying to clear inventory.

I’m loving the EV around town. Not too crazy about taking it on a trip as doing so requires a lot of planning and allocation of time for charging.

On the plus side - it hasn’t burned a drop of oil.
