Rider killed in Layafette
This happened a couple days ago but this is the only link I got:
https://news24-680.com/2021/04/14/mo...oad-collision/ Maybe someone can find more information. A very sad thing. That roundabout was put there some years back to help the thousands of retirees to get from Rossmoor to the freeway. As my father told me when he lived there, “you be careful here, they’re all as blind as a bat”. I’m very sad, I’m 69, Joe was 86. Is that my destiny? |
How tragic and sad... rode through there today and there was a white bike on the circular island. Looked like a memorial and I guess it was. 😢

All I know is that I HATE HATE HATE roundabouts. They are deathtraps for cyclists. The one from article I assume is at Olympic and Pleasant Hill Rd, which I go through several times a week. It is absolutely scary going westbound on Olympic and seeing cars absolutely SCREAMING down Pleasant Hill Rd. They do not stop no matter what, and I've had multiple instances where I had to stop in the roundabout to "let" other traffic fly into the circle. Death to all roundabouts, they are the worst thing to happen to cyclists since the cell phone.

As cyclists, it is better for us that motor vehicle traffic flows steadily, rather than stop-start, and roundabouts help with that. I saw an article about bicycle safety wrt roundabouts, and IIRC, the traffic volume at the junction has a major bearing on how safe the junction is for bikes. We just had a 3-roundabout interchange built at the downtown off-ramp from Hwy 19 here, and I thought it would be a disaster when I saw the plans, but it's actually worked out ok so far. With the obvious exception of people who just don't know how to use roundabouts. |
Words fail me. This is sad news. Very sad.

I’m so sad about Joe and very upset that it happened at that roundabout. So many cyclists use it to get over to the trail... all it takes is one person not to be looking.

This sucks. Effin' drivers.
I was always told that I should take the lane in roundabouts; it's worked so far. |
Never talked to Joe but have seen him out riding. Sad to lose an inspiration like him. That circle can get pretty busy and it has its share of bikes with the Moraga trail near by.

The Mount Diablo Cyclists are putting on a memorial this Saturday at Trek Alamo for Joe. If anyone is interested in attending, more info is on the Facebook Event page.
