Ride of Silence 2022 this coming Wednesday May 18th

If your area cyclist advocacy group or club participates in the National Ride of Silence a reminder it's coming up this Wednesday. We're fortunate in our local area to have a very active spokesperson and organizer who himself was hit and severely injured in November, so this year's ride has even more relevance to him but he's been an advocate for many many years. Witness his (Steven Hardy-Braz) experience on this bike video from his accident.

Here's a link of participating cities by state: https://www.rideofsilence.org/locations-domestic.php

Another "in" we have in Eastern NC is that one of our local riders works at one of the 3 area TV stations so probably because of his connections the Ride of Silence gets plenty of media coverage, so it's well attended and I always get a good feeling from participating. I hope your city participates and you can make time for it.

Amazingly the local news videos from the past years are still active

I always worry about this on my rides. I try to stick to roads that have a decent shoulder, but living in a rural community that sometimes is just not an option. It seems most people try to give me some room, which I always wave appreciation. But some people absolutely refuse to yield even an inch off their path, sometimes coming within a foot or so of taking me out. Trying to stay healthy is going to end up killing me.

I just saw this today. I had forgotten about the ROS over the past couple of years. I checked my region but no ROS planned for this year in the greater Seattle area.. I have rode in a couple of them in the past dating back to 2008. In the past they have been very large events with hundreds of riders.

I may do the Philly one. Bike is in a shop not far from the start and should be ready to roll by Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday I rode my CCM 3 speed 92 miles on a perfect day. I saw 5 CF riders also on the highway part.
On the way home I was riding in the narrowest shoulder here, less than 3 feet, with busy 65 mph traffic and trucks.
I didn't get hit, imagine that.
Too bad the ill educated clod in the OP video didn't also ride where he belongs.

I went on an early RoS and determined it was pretty useless. We listened to the ride leader listing off all the cyclists who have been killed by motorists in the last zillion years, then we rode around a couple of neighborhoods. Visibility was essentially zero. Lately they seem more useful - they start on campus and ride about 5 miles down the main drag to the state capitol where there is a speaker. The group has police escort and includes a sign trailer. I was going to go this year, but ... it rained. Lots of that this year. :(

Glad to hear it's been improved, it really helps when local TV & newspapers get involved. Only one station in our area did coverage this year but there were probably 100 or more riders and we did get support from fraternity row shout-outs and motorists, many (in that southern tradition of respect) surprisingly pulling over as we passed....and my '85 Ironman got screen time in the report :)

2023 ROS coming is coming up next Wednesday.....it's always the 3rd Wednesday in May so this year May 17th, but this post has such good info I didn't want to start over with explanations of what it's about. Highly recommended if you have one in your area
