Since it is too nasty to do much outside (other than snow & ice remediation) I decided to work on a crusty, rusty Raleigh Sports that I picked up a few weeks ago. When I first looked at it, I thought it was black with a rust patina, but upon further inspection it is root beer. I had cleaned up the front wheel a week ago, and have done my best to straighten the front axle that was bent. It is not perfect, but good enough IMO.

Today I finished the bottom bracket and put the crankset back on the frame. There are still 3 places where the PO's 30 year old electrical tape is still present. The last layer of which is stuck to the frame more tenaciously than the paint. Here are a few photos:

I suspect I met him under similar circumstances as you. I don't remember what I was looking for, but it was vintage. The young 'uns on the sales floor thought I was speaking Martian, so they said, "Let's ask Hal!" He had a repair stand right up front in the old store (about a block downtown). He knew what I was looking for immediately (didn't have any) but we spent the next 20 minutes or so down the nostalgia rabbit hole all while he was a non-stop ball of energy slinging flats for delivery guys.

My Humber still wears 3 or 4 stripes of what was once metallic red reflective tape on the white tail of the rear fender. I have tried removing it with a razor and it lifts paint even if you pick at it a micro at a time.....

Anyone have any experience with Sturmey Archer modern dynamo drum brake hubs? I think the model is XL-FDD for the 90mm. Would it be a crime to build new, aluminum rimmed wheels using this for a vintage (1970's) Raleigh Sport? Would I be banned from the forum? ;)

I'm guilty of putting on some modern (but classic looking) parts on my bikes. I'd like to see how that works out for you.

I think someone on BF has used them and they worked well. I've used the front drum brake, and it's very good. I think you would be continuing the spirit of the bike if you used them. Please go ahead.

Hmm, maybe you should put snow tires on it. Drum brakes and snow tires: what could keep you off the roads? I rode in the blizzard today just for fun.

So many 3 speeds in Ontario seemed to get this treatment, I've seen City of London red reflective stickers on the seat-stays of some of them. They are all quite tenacious in their adhesion even after 30 or 40 years. Personally I just leave 'em now.

I've been running a 70mm front drum brake on my all-season fixed gear bike and it works nicely. I haven't done any maintenance to it in 5 years besides opening the barrel adjuster a bit. It does take a while to brake the pads in though, so I did ride it with a bit of drag in an attempt to speed that process up. I built my housemate a 3 speed drum rear along with a front X-FDD and that's been going strong for a year. The hardware that comes with these has poor chrome plating on it and it's corroded quickly in our salty winter roads. I grease (or anti-seize) all the threads on the barrel adjusters. I broke a wire inside an X-FDD by apparently not having the nuts torqued down enough, but S-A sent me a new one under warranty, so avoid spinning the hub without cranking the nuts down tight. Apparently S-A is working on a new 5 speed hub that has a rotary shifter so I might be tempted to build one up in the future; they are apparently for sale now online.

Yes m'am... I have the wheels built, just haven't gotten them mounted on a bike yet. If you plan on mounting it on a Raleigh Sport you will probably need to A) spread the forks and B) file the drop outs to make them a bit larger. I built my wheels to go on an old Raleigh Record frame set that I have, but they may end up on something else first, like my Dawes.

I have an SA XL-FDD dynamo drum on my winter bike. Not a crime at all. Stopping is good. As Aaron says, you'll need to file the fork ends to fit the axle and re-space to 100mm.

Another caveat... DO NOT use compression less brake cables and housing, it will overload the system and likely cause catastrophic fork failure.

The Ideal saddle has found a home on this Glider 2 Speed Kick Back project.

My friend Steve built a 70's Sports with modern S-A drum brakes. Seems to work well.

He replaced the fork, but then noticed a few months later that the tubing was starting to separate from the lugs at the headtube. So I guess this is the extreme "cautionary tale" of drum brakes on old three speeds.

I lurk over there on occasion. I must say I'm surprised that most people seem to support the notion. Though Squeezebox finds it silly.

Squeezebox has been trolling the Touring forum for the last few months. He seems to have a special hatred for the Surly Long Haul Trucker, for some reason. I suppose I could make a few unkind comments about Surly, but I have no doubt an armed employee of QBP would knock on my door and force me to retract my comments.

Only a guess, but I would think hitting bumps in the road would stress the head tube lug to down tube joint more than breaking. I'm thinking that the joint was faulty all along and would have happened at some point even without the drum brake mod.

Probably true, but the whole drum brake fiasco probably hastened the situation.
