No drama and no sniveling, although my friend called his wife when we stopped to eat and he put her on speaker so I told her he was sniveling about forgetting his warm gloves. She laughed.

Yum, concrete open spandrel arch. My favorite. Don’t see those in the Midwest very often. Too susceptible to salt damage.

It's a pretty neat bridge. People were bungy jumping from it at one time. Now there is a "No bungy jumping" sign.

My Propel with 55mm rims and wide aero frame sections gets knocked around a lot. Even with 30mm rims, it does some side hopping. My Colnago with 45mm rims is pretty stable.

Last summer, I was drafting my 128# wife with a severe cross wind and a gust shifted her sideways. I swear it was at least 6-8”.

There is another canyon near here that has 2 of these wooden framed bridges. I don't know what they're called but the only other one in the county burned down a few years ago. I think they're from the 30s.

Your current situation is you're trapped in a fish torturing device?

If I recall, California has quite a few open spandrel arches on the Pacific Coast Highway. :thumb:

My early Reynolds rims are the worst, and a very close second were the Mavic Kryserium Equipe wheels. Those big fat spokes loved to latch onto the air. Trainer wheels now, and that's fine.

I think the problem was, even those it was windy I wasn’t expecting the sudden wall of air. Going down the hill I was shielded by trees, but at the very bottom it opens up and that’s where I got blasted. I was so focused on my non UCI super tucked position I forgot about the wind and it caught me by complete surprise. Plus have you seen the madone from the side? It’s got more surface area than a barn door.

With these facts I rest my case.

They are. I read an article about them years ago but don't remember much of it. There is a metal arch bridge above Santa Barbara.

Yes. I get blasts of wind on roads with a deep cut through the hills. As soon as you pass the cut you get strange air flow. You can get the venturi effect while between the sides of the cut and when you come out the other side you don't know what to expect.

My boss always said (jokingly) that we should build a titanium open spandrel arch.

Now they are out of network and I'd have to travel 20 miles to the nearest Coumadin clinic. If they were in network, there is one 10 minutes from my house. Big medicine and big insurance are fighting and I'm stuck in the middle.

Big insurance/medical hates you.

Same.

I found a report from CalTrans that said “At least thirteen A-frame truss bridges were constructed by Los Angeles County from 1926 to 1959.” The report shows a pic of the Cayucos Creek Bridge A-Frame truss built in 1940.
