Trouble likely coming my way

You may hear cries of help from me. While making the bed this morning I noticed this grease stain of unmistaken origin on the duvet cover. Bike maintenance area is adjacent to our laundry area. Apparently she hasn’t noticed yet. — Dan

Sleeping with your bike? <grin>

Pine Sol, a toothbrush and a little elbow grease will get it out.

I recently spilled bacon grease on a wood deck. Krud Cutter fixed it in about 10 minutes.

I would recommend it for all your grease related needs.

Run-roh. I see a trip to Kay Jewelers in your immediate future. :D

Or try Liquid Paper first. Much cheaper.

It's been quiet. She may have gone straight to the wok on the head.

GeezyRider 03-25-24 02:39 PM

Pretend it's a skid mark in your jockey shorts--turn it inside out before she notices.

Another good reason to wax chains.

Good day to start your next bike tour?

If you can find some old-fashioned GoJo, you can try rubbing that into the grease and then washing the cover. I don't know if the orange pumice stuff will work or not. Might be noticeably gritty.

I haven't had to worry about grease stains for over 10 years. I have a Co-Motion Pangea Rohloff.

Saturate the stains with degreasing hand cleaner (e.g., Goop) and wash. Might take a couple of runs, but it will come out. This technique has restored tranquility in our home many times and has even been adopted by spouse for grease stains not of my making.

pdlamb beat me to it above, but it bears repeating.

Tell her she shouldn't get the laundry that close to your bike maintenance area.

I wouldn't tell my wife that, but I think it is OK if you tell your wife that.

Mtracer 03-25-24 04:02 PM

I'd fess up before trying any DIY cleaning without her knowledge. If the DIY cleanup doesn't go well, it will be orders of magnitude worse. In other words, when in a hole, stop digging!

There's also that chance it really didn't come from your bike. But it does look like it had to brush up against the cassette for that mark. How in the world would that have happened. Unless of course, you are the moron your wife undoubtedly believes your are.

Good luck!

single life was easier but I was more of a slob

Try Carbona Stain Devils #7 for motor oil. I’ve had good luck with using it (and the other Carbona products) on laundry.

WaveyGravey 03-25-24 04:15 PM

If you have a good dry-cleaning shop nearby, take it to them. They can most likely get it out.

It has been my experience that Odorized Mineral Spirits will effectively break up the grease quite easily. The problem is to then remove the OMS and the grime that is in suspension. Rubbing/scrubbing in straight Dawn dish detergent into the stain area and virorously thoroughly hand washing the affected area in a few inches of water in a bathroom sink seems to work pretty well at displacing the OMS/grime. Then a fresh water rinse to remove the Dawn. From there straight into the washing machine on hot.

The problem, I think is that standard laundry detergent works on "not oil" while dish soap works on cooking oil. So using a standard laundry detergent is the wrong kind of detergent for the job in this case.

Go right to the root of the problem, divorce her.

Jughed 03-25-24 05:17 PM

Wax your chain, save your marriage.

DangerousDanR 03-25-24 05:44 PM

Can you replace it? Might be the cheapest option. If not, consider taking it to a dry cleaner. They may be able to get the stain out without damaging the cover.

rsbob 03-25-24 06:49 PM

I would claim I was out of the country when that happened. If that doesn’t work, plead insanity.

Reynolds 03-25-24 07:06 PM

Calling that patina wouldn't work, I guess?

Agreed. This problem can be solved with money.

ScottCommutes 03-25-24 07:15 PM

Yeah, stuff like that is prone to getting caught on something in my dryer, too.
