The Lost League

Does anyone remember where this logo came from? (aside from Miami, thanks)

If you DO remember it, do you have any good stories to tell?

EventServices 02-12-05 08:17 AM

OK, several days have passed with no responses, so I'll give away the answer:

The National Cycle League.
It was a short-lived attempt at creating cycling as a city-based league.

It was a half-baked attempt administered by a largely incompetent NFL cast-off commissioner and several misguided owners.

I came across the Miami Wave t-shirt while cleaning out a closet. I had hoped that some readers of this board would have stories/insight.

Maybe it's best to bury it in the backyard.

gcasillo 02-12-05 08:21 AM

You gotta let it go, man. ;)

EventServices 02-12-05 10:32 AM

You're right.
I'm just hearing the old adage "those who forget the past are destined to repeat it"

Actually, I was hoping to comiserate with other NCL brothers.

jbhowat 02-12-05 10:53 AM

Did it ever actually get started, or did it fizzle before the first season?

gcasillo 02-12-05 11:01 AM

And what cities were slated to participate?

Yo brother...I was on the La Wings for a short time...actually only rode one race in.

EventServices 02-13-05 07:51 AM

Their biggest year was 1994 when they had all of their races on ESPN 2

They had a all of the top racers on their teams, but they only had to commit to a couple of races, so they could continue to ride with their trade teams.
The finals were held in Monte Carlo!
Then they lost all their money, the commissioner was an IDIOT, and they hardly did anything in 1995. It was a pretty cool idea, but poorly executed. And now the concept will never take off because of it.

Let me see if I can list the teams and their notable rider:
Miami Wave - Carl Sundquist
Houston Outlaws - Alan McCormack
Tulsa (spelled backwards = "A ****" - the riders taught us that one)
Boston Banshees- Frank and Mark McCormack
N.Y. Ghosts - Mike McCarthy?
San Diego -
L.A.Wings - Kurt Stockton
Portland Thunder - Robby Ventura
S.F. Shakers - Thurlow Rogers
Amsterdam Tigers - Pete Pieters
London Lancers
Milan Forza
Pittsburgh Power - Jeff Rutter

velocipedio 02-13-05 10:33 AM

wasn't there a short-lived plan to revive the idea in the world cycling league? i remember some big talk about fox sports coverage...

Yep, '94 was the year I was on the wings...and we had the 'Stockton Brothers'...i was in awe.

ed073 02-21-05 12:18 AM

I don't see Roberto Gaggiolli or Graeme Miller on that list....they'd have to have been starters from memory.

Greg Oravetz
Steve Hegg
Nate Reiss
Nelson Vails

He's still going....

I know this is an ancient thread that you have revived, but I'd like to see that Wings jersey.

This is actually interesting, never heard of this whole thing.

Hard to believe they had these races on ESPN..

YMCA 12-27-14 01:37 PM

had a few friends that raced on the various squads
they even had a crit at Universal Studios in Orlando
crowds were sparse

shovelhd 12-28-14 07:25 AM

Does this set the zombie thread record?

mollusk 12-29-14 04:45 PM

I ride with a guy that talks about this attempt. I think he might have participated.

And it might be a record, but actually interesting.

LondonRider 04-17-15 04:55 PM

I remember they had a race in New York City down Seventh Avenue and around the streets in the Village. I was there, and if I remember correctly, there were quite a few spectators. The New York Times even covered it on the front page of their sports section.

Franco Harris owned a professional cycling team!
