It was acting VERY fiddly last summer. So that is what motivated me to upgrade. I expect I will still put on the new groupset soon, but maybe not until after the wet spring season if the current setup behaves.

It shouldn't be warm enough to rain in February, here in the Actual North.

This gives you an idea of what pursuing a Snowy Owl for a photo op is like. Most times you can get within range with a long lens but it's still a distant shot and often, like this, the bird is partially obscured. So you creep as close as you dare and then stand there, sometimes for hours, waiting and hoping that when he does decide to relocate you can get a decent bird-in-flight shot.

But most often this is what you get, a useless butt shot of the bird flying away from you. Bastid. Another time . . .

So, I pulled the cassette off of my Zipps, cleaned it all up and reinstalled. From what I can tell this may have finally taken care of the issue- there was a ton of wax buildup along the bottom of the cog which I think was preventing the chain from settling in- user error…

One thing I did notice is that I have a stuck link I can’t seem to get un-stuck. It rides along the top jockey wheel a bit further than the other links and causes it to pull forward.

I think I may hit it with the blow dryer and see if that loosens it up.

They must not like you.

I don't often see an owl, but the crows here like me.

I’m sure the new stuff will be great.

I don’t mind the roads getting a little of the salt rinsed off though.

I expect so, the main obstacle is my lazy mechanic!

Better lazy than inept.

There is that, too. But the price is right.

I’m coming to realize I should consider continuing to pay someone to do it for me.

What wax and method are you using? This seems like more attention that should be necessary - I went with wax to save myself work. But yeah, I've never had this much build-up/flaking, haven't had it cause shifting issues beyond the first 5 minutes or so pedaling, never had a troublesome link, etc. and this is all without wiping down my chains after removing them from the crock.

FWIW, this is the method that I use - https://moltenspeedwax.com/pages/waxing-your-chain

Other than monitoring the temp of the wax, it's super low effort.

These guys are winter visitors from the arctic tundra so they don’t (can’t) hide during daylight, nor need to wait till sundown to hunt.

The road crews will just need to double-down on the salt later, when everything refreezes.

The needle part of the syringe wasn't properly tightened, and I may have wasted as much as half of my weekly MTX ration.

One thing that keeps me from getting an electronic groupset is knowing I'd be completely dependent on a shop to install and troubleshoot. Well, that, and the extra $1000 they cost.

I used silca, I let the wax cool too much before I pulled the chains out and had quite a bit of build up.

The great thing about electronic is that once it’s set, you don’t have to mess with it- it just works, every time. I’ll probably put 12 speed Di2 on the Aspero next year if parts become more readily available.

I'd like to do the same.

Pull your chain while the wax is hot. Then turn off the pot.

Yah. I followed the silca instructions to let it cool, a mistake on my part
