While not strictly an English 3-speed the hub is 100% from Ol’ Blighty…. Had a lovely ride in its latest incarnation but needed to adjust saddle and bars a bit. Amazing what small adjustments can do for comfort.

Here's one I just, more or less, finished. It's a 1970s Malaysian-built Raleigh Sports that I converted into a Path Racer style bike. The wheels came off a Nottingham-built bike that got a set of aluminium wheels, but the rest of the parts are original except for the pedals, handlebar grips, saddle, shifter, tires and tubes. Fun bike.

My mission, should I decide to accept it, is to make these two bikes rideable and presentable. A couple in Ayr ON. found my name after taking the bike to a local shop that didn't want to work on them. Seems they knew someone who had my contact information. Still a mystery. The bikes were put out for garbage after sitting in a leaky garage for many years. A lot of the parts are badly rusted but still functional including the dynohubs. I have scrubbed the mud and bird doo off and started a regimen of penetrating oil. Much of the time spent with the owners was lowering their expectations as these bikes are pretty rough and no amount of buffing is going to help this pair! The bikes were sold new at McPhails in Waterloo ON. Both have B72 saddles, the step through looks better but is dry with minor cracking. The diamond frame saddle is more worn but in better condition.

The rust is much worse than the pictures show, especially the brakes and handlebars. I will keep the group apprised of my progress with them. So far they have been scrubbed with lots of soap and water and are soaking up WD40 to loosen things up. I know some folks aren't fond of WD40 for this purpose, but I still find it the best even if it takes longer to work.

Yeah, I have an Elswick with rusty brakes. I'm planning on sending the set out to get media-blasted and perhaps chrome painted.

Unless it was my own bike, I would not get it blasted and chromed but I do have a good multi-purpose solution. Sand it down and paint it with Duplicolor Steel Wheel paint. That stuff is super tough, works without primer and is a nice silvery metallic finish. I've been using it for years since refinishing the wheels on my old Triumph TR7. You can spray it in a cup and use a brush for smaller parts. Just did some CCM brake levers with it.

Here's the scruffy Huffeigh that followed me home a couple of years ago. I cobbled it together with some parts I had, and I had to buy some, of course. Haven't ridden it that much, and have a couple of questions about whether the hub is working okay. Recently rode it on a quiet road and was able to hear some faint clicking from the hub while pedaling in 2nd and 3rd gears. About 6 clicks per pedal rotation in 2nd, and about 8 per pedal rotation in 3rd. Not noticeable in 1st. Normal? Also, since I had a 3 speed growing up, I believe I remember that bike had a bit of slop in the pedal when going from coasting to pedaling, and this bike does the same -- probably more noticeable since I replaced the rear 18t cog with a 23t. Is this normal? Only thing I have done to the hub (dated 12/59) is clean and regrease bearings on both sides, and I replaced grease and balls in the ball ring. And I have added oil to the hub. So is this hub working as it should, or should it be gone through?

It should click in all three gears, with a different tempo in each gear. The slop from coasting to pedaling sounds like it may be a stuck pawl or broken pawl spring. Going through it wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for your response. I'm thinking I should probably buy replacements for all 4 pawl springs before I go into it. Hopefully wouldn't need any other parts.

I think the "slop" you refer to is due to the larger cog. I notice this with my Superbe that has a 22 or 23 cog.

So, maybe I should try putting the 18t back on it, just to check?

Here is a 1971 Schwinn Racer I just overhauled and cleaned up.

Thw paint took a lot of touching up and it's no show stopper but with a new clear coat and some shiny bliing , not too bad.

Only a matter of time till they get dirty, but looks sharp for now.

Check replacement springs, compare sping tension to originals. I once bought aftermarket springs that had much stronger tension. So much so that it didn’t shift well. I got them for the same reason: old ones were ok but I had it open, why not? I disliked the new operation enough that I put the old ones back in.
