Doing a 15 mile TT with 100 yards of all out sprint to get PR, a black bear crosses 25 yards in front of me. Had to slow to a crawl. Missed the PR by 3 secs.

That why I only pedal in the urban areas around Seattle. No bears (like the attack at Lake Whatcom the other day on a jogger: https://www.cascadiadaily.com/news/2...njures-jogger/ ) but we do have bunny rabbits and coyotes and in the past two separate cougar events at good ol' Discovery Park where I both walked and biked yesterday and walked again this morning.

Actually, kidding, I just have been too lazy to put the bike on a rack and drive out your way.

The last thing I wanted to do was stimulate a pursuit response by looking like prey running away. So slowing down to a crawl where I could quickly stop probably made me look like demented prey. I know a grizzly can hit the low 30s but imagine a black bear could hit somewhere in the 20s. Don’t want to find out. The bear was sighted right next to my usual rest stop for food and drink and relaxing. No relaxing that day. Ate a couple of miles down the road.

Where I live we had a black bear mom and her cubs cross the front lawn and my wife spotted a cougar about 100 yards from our property. Bobcats and deer run and we only hear coyotes at night. Bunny rabbits are high on the local wildlife menu.

Used to live in Lake City and was amazed to see beaver cutting down trees building a lodge about 1/2 mile inland from Lk Wa.in a storm water retention pond with an outflow to the lake.

Did 30 miles this morning, and it was an adventure that was best posted in A&S.

What a day and so glad it wasn’t you. Sounds like one of these days Mr Tri’s number will be up since he chooses not to be observant. next time listen to your gut and stay home.

Quick, actually very slow, recovery ride after yesterdays failed 15 mile TT.

What? No pic of the bear?
Heard about the bears in North Bend. They were all put down. Would rather that they had been relocated far away but that's probably expensive. Have had bears in my place in Redmond the last couple of years but none this year. Only a couple of bobcats and one cougar.

SpeedyBlueBiker 08-06-22 10:16 PM

Rode 38 miles along the Sammamish River Trail (SRT) then the Burke Gilman (BG) from Redmond to the Seattle City line.

dont worry, there are still plenty of bears in North Bend. Miles of uninhabited wild lands surrounding the downtown. Many of the pictures I post, not todays, are of the North Bend area. I bet many of the residents there wish the bears were relocated.

There are plenty in my area/neighborhood as well. We find bear scat on our driveway every once in a while.

From my house to the climbing rock at Marymoor is exactly 50 miles round trip but I've not done it in a while the Burke Gilman beats the crap out of my butt!!!!

Yes, the BG is a bit of a bone shaker in many places. The SRT is a much smoother surface.

I stopped riding around the N end of the lake because the roots are so bad on the BG. I’d rather face the traffic doing the south end route than deal with miles of bumps. Used to commute from Lake City to Kirkland daily using the BG but it was much better before 2000

I posted this account on a local bicycling Facebook group. One of the members there knows him and had this to say:

"He's exceptionally strong for his age, but a rather famously poor bike handler."

mschwett 08-07-22 04:05 PM

58.8 miles, with only one big climb. was really low mojo, not totally sure why… maybe travel and a strenuous beach outing yesterday???

KenCT 08-07-22 04:12 PM

30 miles/2,000 feet in a charity ride, the Tour of Litchfield Hills. I usually do the 50 mile route but not up to it today. Temperature near 90 and I'm only 5 weeks from having foot surgery (plate and 5 screws).
