Trash Find Miyata

Taking my morning walk I found this 1986 Miyata One Thousand on the curb. Before snatching it up I double checked with the owner who said take it! Though dirty, it is in great shape. 7 out of 10.

Nice set of Deerheads.

Excited to get it on the road!

Lascauxcaveman 07-10-20 11:33 AM

Score! Is it your size?

Welcome to the forums.

Gaff 07-10-20 11:35 AM

Fits great!

davester 07-10-20 02:59 PM

Wow, amazing score. One problem...no picture = it didn't happen!

You need to get your post count up to 10 (over 2 days I think) to paste a photo, or you can post the photo url here for somebody else to post.

So I understand. But as I'd just laid my eyes on a Zotz for the first time in my life, my expectations were somewhat different ...

Never mind. Please, carry on. :)

I’ll see what I can do. Can I link to a Flickr page?

I think you can't post links, but partial links are OK- try without the www prefix.

Earl grey? Camomile?

twolve 07-10-20 09:56 PM

I was teased for a Tom Teesdale.

But cool story and amazing find nonetheless!

86 Miyata One Thousand

Still trying to post photos.

I have begun disassembly and clean up. It appears to be totally original, right down to the Vetta saddle and tires. Tires are shot. The saddle was covered with a gel pad and in good shape As mentioned previously it was very dirty but is cleaning up great. There are a few chips in the paint. Nothing serious. Not sure how easy a match for Royal Platinum would be.

Putting it back as original as possible is going to be easy. Ordered a new chain, tires, cables etc. Going to try and find hoods for the Shimano 600 levers as they were nearly dust. I’m fighting the urge to put some spare aero levers on it.

I was not impressed with the frame color at first. The amount of crud on it had a lot to do with it. But with initial cleaning and polishing the Royal Platinum and gold head is actually nice looking.

I will try to post some before and after photos.

Thanks for your comments.

I think new members can post pics to the gallery and then get an assist from a member to put in the thread

Awesome! Sounds fun, what a great trash find.

Sorry, you gotta pay your dues first -- send that bike to me and we'll consider it paid. ;)

Seriously, a Miyata 1000 in the trash? Glad you saved it -- and it is your size (and mine, BTW... just saying... ^^see first line above ^^)

I think my eyes would have popped out of my head if i saw that sitting to be picked up as trash. Cleaned up nice so far

madpogue 07-12-20 04:59 PM

Dog-approved.

How do you like that stand? It looks handy, the way it appears it would fold up. Is it stable?

Gaff 07-12-20 05:07 PM

I really like it. I got it many years ago from Nashbar. Yes it is stable. I have put all kinds of bikes on it. It up out of the way..

3speedslow 07-12-20 05:54 PM

Well no wonder it got thrown away! No bloody front mudguard!!

Triplecrank92 07-13-20 06:42 AM

Nice find! I've never been that lucky to be the "first person" to run across a good bike/frame sitting on the side of the road with the trash. I was fortunate enough to get a great deal on a mint '97, all original Lemond Zurich from a sweet, elderly flea-market lady. She was "lucky" enough to be the first to the trash one morning and got it for free. She said the lady of the house-hold was tossing it because no one would get around to fixing it because it had a flat!

Gaff 07-13-20 07:05 AM

Wow! Great story! Nice find.

1986 Keep it Stock?

I appreciate all the comments regarding the Miyata is stumbled across. It is all apart and I am cleaning things up.

At first blush the rear derailleur (Deerhead) looked to be in great shape. However looking closer, it as a couple things bent and a stop post broken off. It is not going to work. The front derailleur on the other hand Is in great shape. As I mentioned previously getting it close to stock will be fairly easy. I have tires and tubes, chain, cables, hood cover etc coming. The rear derailleur is a setback but I can get a nice used replacement.

if the truth be known, my days of doing a lot of riding is past. I like fixing things. When I am done, this bike will look and ride great, and I will spend a lot of time just standing in my shop admiring it.

Before I spring for a replacement derailleur, the question I ask myself is “stock” or as close as possible the direction I should go with this?

Any thoughts, recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
