Hutchinson tire failure - anyone seen this?
Relatively new FusionS - tubeless, 28mm, typically at 80-85 psi, never on a trainer. I noticed 6 or 7 "zits" on the tread. Clearly, that tire's coming off. Maybe I could pop them and squeeze out the... no. that won't work.
Anyone seen this with Hutchinson tires? This is my first set of Hutchinson. I've been running Schwalbe and Conti. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f47c5a17b5.jpg |
I’m sorry not with specific brand of tires, but Yes. The inner casing has likely torn/separated in areas. Maybe from impacts or riding low air pressure. Age even.

I have had quite a few Hutchinson Fusion Performance tires and never had a problem with them. In fact, I liked them a lot, but, their price jumped a lot during the worst of covid. I just recently ordered a pair of the 28mm from Excel Sports, $48 for a pair. I will have to revisit this thread after getting some miles on them. In the past, they were always great riding tires with good flat protection and durability.
In the interim, I have become a big fan of GK slick clinchers in 26 and 28, IMO, very nice tires. |
Yep, casing failure. I would send the photos to the mfr and ask for replacements. You ought to be able to ride 'em right down to the casings without every seeing that sort of failure.
|
I had some Hutchinson Fusion 28 tubeless which failed on my .... I had some pics but don't know where they are. I think out of three tires two failed or something or three out of four .... in any case I don't buy them any more .... I liked them on the bike until they failed, though ... I think one or two bubbled, one maybe separated near the bead?
Might just have been a bad batch or old ingredients or something .... I liked the tires otherwise. |
Yeah, I did like the ride. I guess it's not surprising the casing failed. I mean, they're made with Storm "Infernal" - not "Internal" Compound.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...114ef6d98a.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e9f5a0489f.png Infernal, adj.; extremely troublesome, annoying; hellish, diabolical. That's such ******** naming, I'm wondering if this is a Chinese knockoff. Surely Hutchinson's smarter that... surely. Edit: Nope. Confirmed - that's what Hutchinson calls it... "Infernal" I did send a couple pics to the manufacturer a couple days ago... crickets so far. And, ordered a couple Schwalbe Pro Ones. |
Yeah, odd looking failure mode!
I have a pair of these in the garage as emergency stock because I got them awhile ago from Competitive Cyclist or Colorado Cyclist on a deeply discounted clearance, like $30 apiece or something. I’ve never ridden them, though. I think they’re Fusion 5, but I’m not sure if they’re the 11 Storm compound or the previous model. I have run Hutchinson’s top -line Galactik tires, but did not experiencee anything like that. Schwalbe Pro One is the greatest tubeless tire of all time, says me, so great call on selecting those. |
Look like blisters in the outer layer that maybe was vulcanized over a bad layer that's letting stuff through. Might be filled with sealant or just air.
I wonder if this persons issue is similar blistering, though Gatorskins are all tubed tires aren't they? https://www.bikeforums.net/general-c...mpy-tread.html |
Maybe something more inherent to the folding of tires?

Well, Hutchinson has not responded to two messages. But Excel Sports - where I bought the tires - responded immediately today. Said they've seen a few Hutchinson's fail like this. They're out of the Fusion5 but sending a different (better) tire today. THAT is good customer service!

I had a pair do that earlier this year. I didn't notice for awhile and when I did, I kept riding the one on the rear. When the blisters popped, there was a small low spot but no air loss. Mine didn't look as bad as yours but it was enough to make me swap the front tire to something else. Otherwise a great tire.

Had the same problem with a set of Pirelli Cinurato Velo setup tubeless.
bad batch. Replacement pair are fine. |
Cash would have been better, to help pay for the newly ordered tires
