It's odd for a GB stem to be on a Motobecane. Usually they were on Raleighs and other British bikes. Motos normally came with Pivo or Philiipe stems and bars. The diameter on GBs and the French stems are not the same, and the GB may have been forced into the Moto steerer tube, sometimes creating a split on the flat part of the steerer.

Turns out it was a nitto. I bought the bike.

Current iteration.
Also, the steerer was fine. The stem went in and out just like it was supposed to.

Not gb then.

And nicer.

Cool. I'm not familiar with that style of Nitto stem. Doubt that it's original tho. It's probably shorter than the original stem for a more upright position to go along with the upright bars

It had non original bars and brakes... Sidepulls Gran compe.
I put the upright bars on it as my arthritic neck prefers them.

This is an '82 Vitus 172 Grand Record that came up on the "are you looking for one of these" thread. At first I thought the chrome fork was a replacement, but it was the original that the '82s came with. Just finished overhauling it. Great riding bike. I've actually never had a Motobecane that I didn't like. The Silca Impero pump came with it.
