How many miles? I have no idea.

I read many threads in this forum where people talk about how many miles they get out of their bikes. Or how many miles they rode in a year.

I have only the faintest notion how many miles I ride in a year. If I guessed 2K it could be anywhere from 1K to 4K. And I don't keep track of how much I ride which different bike (it changes all the time). So I haven't the slightest clue how many miles are on any of my bikes.

I am only interested in two rides.
The one I am on and the one that is next.

Get a bike computer and it does all the work.

Doesn’t work like that.

I was in a Large Club that kept Track of Miles.
If one could ride a 100 a mile day in each Month of the year you would get a 100 Mile Jersey

Got Three of Them.

WTF. Google sends me a monthly report, why it started I don't know.
So anyway, it tells me more or less all the places I went. How many miles with the car, bikes and walking.
I haven't figured out how accurate it is. I sure as hell wouldn't leave home without a speedometer on my bikes.

a lot of cyclists care about logging miles whether due to personal fitness, wear and tear on components/replacement frame or simply how one tire compares regarding
durability vs another. to each their own. if you don't care about logging miles or performance or maintenance, you're beyond the minutiae and more power to you.

So you started a thread about apathy? Must be a sub category for that.:D

Not caring about what was accomplished on a ride other than having enjoyed the ride (hopefully) is great. If one's goal is to get out and ride a ride, I think that is pure bliss. Not for mileage, not for elevation, not for speed, not for time spent on the saddle or standing, not for more than someone else did or what one's self had previously done.

As for myself at age 70 I have every intension to ride my age in miles and/or more when I "KIT-Up."

Is this thread about not knowing yearly miles, journaling, or about not knowing a current ride’s mileage as it is being ridden? Those are 2 very different things.

I’ve used a bike computer for decades so I know the number of miles I have ridden today, along with avg speed, etc. but I don’t keep a journal. The closet thing was writing daily mileage on a wall calendar for a few years way back in the 80’s. But I abandon that by the time 1990 rolled around.

I don’t have any problems with people keeping weekly/monthly/yearly track; it might be interesting. It is not something I do. And I’ve never thought of doing it with any other sport or activity. If someone skates, do they keep track of yearly stairs and grinds, or yearly waves caught surfing, tennis aces, guitar notes played, etc. Although golf is probably one where journaling, carrying a handicap, has value.

Quantifying an experience has a tendency to become more important than the experience itself.

That is a good distinction. I never really thought about it that way. I am a pretty meticulous planner, tracker, and data collector for individual rides, but I don't keep track of my own mileage.

She made the 100 riding for her Diabetic Dad.
It was The First Time she ever rode a 100 Miles.

I recently got an Apple Watch with elevation. I’ve always wondered about elevation gains on rides/sections of rides. I’ve kept a record of the elevation on typical rides with climbing or mtb trails. It is not extensive, and more of just interest.

I have an idea of my avg speed range. I don’t record it, but I know if I had a stronger or weaker day. It is funny that there are rides when I feel like cutting it short and I end up going longer at a good pace. That does encourage me at times when I start out feeling pretty feeble on other rides.

Bit like you, my yearly mileage is just a guess. I’m thankful for just being out there turning the peddles.

John
