Help replacing seat stay insert for rack
 

Hi.

Background: When trying to install a rear rack, the threaded insert in one of the seat stay tubes broke free (rotating) and I had to pry it out. So now I have a hole in one of my seatstay tubes. Tube is not compressed or otherwise damaged--just a hole where the threaded insert was. Frame is aluminum. I don't know the tube thickness. I know its an M5 insert

Question: I need some help using a threaded rivnut tool I bought from Amazon. My question is how to set the limit/stop lever in the back that controls the pull depth? I am installing a threaded rivnet on the seat stay of an aluminum bicycle.--to hold the arm of a rear rack. The seat stay tube is rounded and obviously I cannot see inside to determine when the flange is compressed. I don't want to pull too hard and compress the threads or worse, damage the aluminum tube. How do I do this without effing up my bike? If I dont use to limit screw, how do I know when to stop pulling?

Stop pulling when it's tight.

How would you compress the threads? You've got a solid threaded rod in the rivnut...nothing is going to compress. Just go til it's tight and doesn't spin.

I've never liked RivNut like inserts, but I'm a steel guy:)

The above advice is sound. But like many easy to do things that one has never done a practice or two helps provide confidence and some experience to judge the actual repair with. Get a few inserts and drill a sheet or tube and set one. Think about how that went and try another.

I have added some epoxy to the frame/insert/hole whern I had concerns about the insert's fit of the ability to compress it fully. Andy
