I checked again tonight to see what the ends say, and they are made in Birmingham, so probably a good pick for a BCC made cycle or similar.

Looking at the pics of your Hercules, are those the original handle bar grips? If, not where did you find them?

Not sure my 1980 Tourist qualifies as a vintage ride ( after all I'm older than it is ) but it certainly is a Raleigh three speed and I'm in NW DC and certainly up for a group ride. I'll mention it on the WABA forum to see if there are any interest there.

My hip hates the upright riding position but I love this bike... I use it for short errands and will be taking my wife on dates with it as she rides hers.

I doubt too many people outside of this forum would recognize that your Tourist is as new as it is. If I ride mine it is newer than yours :P IMHO a Lake Pepin ride is about the IGH and not the age of the bike. If you read the reports a there are quite a few newish bikes, but the primary requirement is the IGH. The ABCE is all about British cycles, but is predominantly IGH. The last time I went there was a gorgeous Flying Scot and a sweet Jack Taylor.

It's vintage both in style and years, so it certainly counts. I always considered my 1978 Tourist a "vintage" bike. The DL-1's features add to its years in some ways.

If I were forced to pick a cut off, I'd say 25 years old or more. It's sort of moot with English 3 speeds because you generally see them in early 1980s era and earlier. I would not be opposed to allowing in other vintage bikes. Though if you end up on the C&O Tow Path, thin road tires may not do as well. A DL-1 would be right at home on that path though.

A friend of mine showed me a bike he's been given, which appears to be a Raleigh Dawn Tourist. It's hard to tell because it's a box of parts at the moment, not all of them original. It clearly has rod brakes and takes 26 x 1 3/8" wheels. The front wheel has a dynohub dated 1956; the rim is a Raleigh branded "Westrick" pattern rim. But the rear wheel has a plain Endrick rim on a 1953 AW. It's clearly not original; not even a Dunlop rim.

So I told him the rod brakes will not work with the plain box-pattern Endrick rim. But am I right? Or could he use the rod brakes with the Endrick rim?

If not... well, if anyone has a 40H Raleigh pattern rim you'd like to trade for something, please let me know.

SirMike1983 08-13-13 08:24 AM

Dawn would indeed be 26 x 1 3/8 with rod brakes. It should be a Sports type frame. What I have not checked is whether the Dawn has a lower bottom bracket than a Sports or is actually the same. They were advertised as having a "lower" bottom bracket and were referred to as "safety" models sometimes. Mine handles more or less like a Sports frame would, though other factors make it unique in some ways.

Replace the Endrick with a Westrick if he's using stirrup brakes.

wrk101 08-13-13 06:46 PM

Well, I was able to rebuild one twist shifter so far, why? I have no idea. This one was missing the little detent ball bearing. Fortunately, the spring was still in place! So I tried a variety of sizes, the 5/32 inch (headset size) seemed to fit the best, so I use it. Had to guess a little as to location on the spring and mechanism, although it was somewhat obvious.

The twist housing on the other bike is broken, I did buy a replacement housing off ebay (again, why, I really don't know). Who knows if even all the parts are there? I'll see when it shows up.

I guess I would rather have it running with the mediocre gear as originally built, than something better. We'll see how long this purity lasts.

Ah- that's basically what I have but with the smooth street tread. I love the concept of a vintage ride, especially with all the cool trails we have in the VA/MD/DC area, but I just can't get into the clothing/fashion part. For me it's all about the bikes and the ride. I'd love to see a 3 speed/vintage ride group around here like they do with Lake Pepin over in the midwest.

Granted, a lot of the "Gentlemen Cyclists" (and "Ladies!") who ride Lake Pepin get dressed up too.

Something I've learned about ride organization over the years: If you want to see it happen, you have to be the one that makes it happen. That's what I did with the Three Speed Rides here in Portland.

The rod brake stirrup system has enough play that the pads can easily wander over the flat surface of an endrick and catch a spoke. Then you're in trouble.

I recently picked up this pair of matching men's/women's Raleigh Superbes to restore and have started on the men's already

Recently I moved cities and sold a bunch of finished/unfinished bikes as I initially had no where to keep them and didn't want to move them all. The French 3 speed below was one of them and I somewhat regret selling it even though I got a great price for it. My wife would have enjoyed keeping it and it was in amazing shape

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...31332159_n.jpg

So I felt really lucky when I found the matching men's and women's bikes. They are in no where near the condition the French one was but I think it's going to be fun riding around on matching bikes.

So far I have completely tore down the men's and before today had cleaned, polished and assembled all the body, rebuilt and greased the bottom bracket and the steering bringing it to the point in the picture below. I was too excited to get building that I forgot to take pictures of it completely broken down.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...32308786_n.jpg

Today was a short day, I worked from 5:30am-7am, because there is too much real life in may way lol but, I managed the polish and install the brake callipers, brake levers, shifter and seat post bringing it to the point below. It's starting to look like a bike again

Just thought I would share a little bit of my new English 3-speed project.

fixed1313 08-16-13 01:16 PM

The bike is looking great .......... can't wait to see the pair done.

_dylan 08-17-13 08:19 PM

Looking for a black woman's 3 speed. Don't really care what brand as long as it's English. If anyone's selling a black woman's 64 Raleigh Sports, that'd be absolutely perfect. Anyone selling anything?? Nothing has been popping up as of late.. :(

kwmcd 09-09-13 02:51 PM

Here is the next set of progress pics.

Next I have to rewire the light set, drill out a damn pedal that won't come out of the arm, shifter cable, and replace the rear chain guard mount. After that I will get hung on the wall for 2 reasons one, I am on spending freeze and everything else that needs to be done requires money and two, i want to get the women's to this point as well and then buy all matching parts for them.

gna 09-09-13 03:21 PM

I recently found a DL-1 for a good price. I have never worked on Rod brakes before, so I need some advice:
Do the brake pads (both front and rear) need to be removed before a wheel can be removed? I can't see any way around it, unless I'm missing something.

JBC353 09-10-13 06:15 AM

No need to remove the brake pads. Loosen the adjusters at the head and then you can slip the locating pins on the stirrups out. The rear is actually easier because they are in slots. Once out the stirrups can be expanded open to let the wheel out.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

JBC353 09-10-13 01:36 PM

I should add that to get enough clearance to raise the pins out of the holes on the front brake you may need to take the front wheel just out of the dropouts, push it up into the fender and then move the stirrup up enough to get the pins out.

Nabbed another one today ........... I am just starting the dating process, Sturmey AW hub with no date code so I am out of luck there. I will start looking through some old catalog scans and see what I can come up with. If anyone has any input feel free to chime in. At any rate, on to the pics, taken minutes after unloading it from the van. This is as found condition.

Alright, time for another Society of Three Speeds hosted Three Speeds ride in Portland, Oregon!

The details:
THREE SPEED RIDE
SAT SEPT 21
1 PM
MONTAVILLA PARK, NE 82ND AVE AND GLISAN ST

(meet on the Glisan side by the picnic pavilion)
A ride celebrating the humble internally geared three speed bicycle. Bring your trusty three speed or other internal hub gear bicycle. (If you don't have one, it doesn't matter, just come! But if you had the choice between a high-performance crabon fibre racer and an old beater, bring the beater.) Casual paced ramble of approx. 15 miles, mostly flat with a hill or two. (No shame in walking it!) We'll take breaks, refuel and all that. The ultimate destination is Chapman School in NW to watch the Vaux Swifts. Bring lights!

Interesting, has a "Wheel Goods Minneapolis" sticker and a Minneapolis bike license. I did some looking last night and I can't match it up to anything I have seen, the lettering font is very different from anything else I have seen. Maybe it is from "up nort". :)

My guess would be late 60's Canadian model.

Thanks, I am thinking it is a "Sports" with drop bars, the decals are throwing me off though, can't find pics with those decals, even looked through a Canadian three speed blog. Found pics of copy with that style of decal, a Rex Classique. Here is a link to that one.

The white fenders and chain guard point to Canadian market, the white head tube was used on US spec bike up until 1961, the gold foil wraps on the down tube were 1965-1968.

Problem is Raleigh would build just about anything for anybody and once something got used didn't mean they wouldn't pull it out of the parts bin and use it years later.

Aaron :)
