Thanks.
My lovely wife is very creative. That pond began its life as a pool, but we didn't use it. It has a wrap around natural filtration system, on two sides, made up of gravel and plant roots, with water pumped through the gravel. A closed system with a skimmer and 'Skippy Filter' at the pump entrance.
It's a delightful place to live. And she is a delightful person to live with.

I hate to seem like a negative Nelly, but what’s the mosquito situation?

Because the water is circulating, I am optimistic that it's a non-issue.

Why are we here?

Where did we come from?

datlas 06-02-22 09:00 AM

I should probably take this to the 50+, but I have become more and more aware of my presbyopia (poor near vision) over the past few weeks. At 57, I know I am overdue for needing "cheaters" reading glasses but I was hoping to dodge that bullet for awhile longer.

I wouldn't. The consequences can be bad if you misread something at work.

I thought I needed readers in my 50s. They put me straight onto progressive tri-focals.

You've never used readers? Most of us need them before age 57, I think. I started needing them to read in my 40s but was able to get by on the bike and driving until later. I started using off the shelf readers on the bike several years ago and they work fine. I especially wanted the help on the mtb.

My wife picked up her new prescription yesterday. Not coincidentally, last night she discovered that one of her houseplants has spider mites. :o

I have a pair of readers in my front pocket. I had generally only needed them for super-fine print over the past few years. But it's gotten worse so I may be needing them for regular print.

You done good getting to 57. I was around 47 when I noticed my 20/20 was slipping away. :(

My Dad went years before getting reading glasses. He used to hold the newspaper at arms length. It helped that he has long arms for his height. Eventually, his arms were not long enough, and he bought those half glasses for reading sometime in his 50s, then eventually glasses for everything in his 70s.

I, OTOH, have astigmatism AND increasing presbyopia, so neither holding things close nor far away is much help. Even so, I have always been able to pass the eye test for driving, so I'm not required to wear glasses.

When I started having trouble seeing up close my wife went to a pharmacy (because I was too stubborn/stupid) and picked up a selection of readers in different strengths. I settled on 1:75s and used them for everything for years. I still have that pair that she purchased in about 1998. Last month I got a new prescription pair to use around the house for tv, computer, etc. They are around 2.0, according to the ophthalmologist, but I have a difference between my eyes.

My friend, who is your age, wears a contact lens in one eye for everything. We were on a ride once and it migrated up under his eyelid. Must have been annoying.

I leave my glasses in the house when I detail the cars. What I don't see won't bother me.

Over time, what you think is "super-fine print" evolves....

BillyD 06-02-22 09:43 AM

Just yesterday I had my annual ophthalmology exam. She said my eyes are so bad that a new prescription will only marginally help; the two eyes are moving in opposite directions from normal.

It's time for cataract surgery.
