Di2 Battery Dies!
First of all, I know that Di2 has a dumb, little battery indicator light. But I guess I just never payed any attention to it.
So after five months, 1,716 miles and 85,810 vertical feet, it suddenly happened. I was thirty miles away from home and all of a sudden I began to notice that my front derailleur wasn’t shifting properly. Instead of an effortless, one touch of a button, suddenly I had to push twice to get the front derailleur to move in any direction. I had to double tap it. How annoying. :innocent: Anyway, that’s when I first noticed the dreaded red light on the battery indicator. I wasn’t sure how many more miles of shifting I could expect, but I thought I’d probably be able to get home. I was wrong. About a mile later, the front derailleur totally stopped shifting. Luckily, I was in the small ring because I still had another 1000 feet of climbing to get home. The good news is that the rear derailleur worked fine the entire time. The only real downside was some harsh cross-chaining on the way home. Also, my garmin 500 battery died on this same trip. :notamused: |
Um...how many rides did it take? Or are you saying it lasted 5 months on one charge?
|
Nice little dig at SRAM. I'm a SRAM fan but I still got a chuckle out of it, well done.

Yeah, that's how it tells you the battery's dying. Once the front derailleur stops shifting, all battery power goes towards the rear in an effort for you to get home.
It did its job. Three hours on the charger and that thing should be back to full capacity. |
So . . . the battery didn't die. It wasn't even comatose. It went into that special mode reserved for people who go 5 months without a recharge and don't take the nano-second it takes to push the button and check the charge state.
All is well. |
I really need to slow my roll...... Just say'n.
Mod edit :innocent: |

I didn't see any digs at SRAM in his post. I don't think the "double tap" reference had anything to do with SRAM.

I am somewhat intrigued by Di2 but it's too much money for now.
A word to the wise: If you have nothing nice to say..... |

thats one fear I would have. I am forgetful person by nature and if I happen to be excited about my ride and off I go without remembering to have charged my bike.....I would be in trouble. To easy for me to make that mistake. I will rely on my manual shifting which hasn't failed me yet. plus I can save my money to buy other things I dont need!

I've had several mechanical brifter and cable failures over the years. It all breaks. Overall my impression is that in the long run a Di2/battery will prove to be quite reliable and maintenance free in comparison. Hell, my 7900 rear mechanical brifter failed after two years.

It's easy to forget. Di2 batteries really only need recharging once a month or so if you ride a ton, even less if you don't.
