Turning 60 in 2 months - do I go all in?

So I just got back into cycling in 2018 after barely riding a bike over the prior 45+ years. I bought a nice aluminum disc brake Trek Domane as I wasn't sure how much I would ride. Two years, 60 lbs loss, and 26,000 km later I'm approaching my 60th birthday. I have no illusions about setting any KOM's but I do like to see how far up the leader boards I can get. If I'm in the top 1/3 or better on the local segments, I feel satisfied. Lately I've been hearing the siren song of a new bike (looking at the 2021 Emonda's). I feel like this may be a mid-life crisis moment but am throwing it out there - should I take a leap and go light, electronic and aero and use the Domane for indoor trainer and gravel duty or just look to upgrade the Domane?

How many times are you going to turn 60?

It's a milestone that should be celebrated.

Rage 08-27-20 04:01 PM

Go all in!

GlennR 08-27-20 04:02 PM

Do it.

tigat 08-27-20 04:14 PM

You are watching the leader boards, I'm guessing you can afford it or you wouldn't be asking, and the new tech is truly smile inspiring. I am having some trouble coming up with a reason not to do it.

MinnMan 08-27-20 04:48 PM

GO FOR IT.

If you like road riding, you really should do yourself the favor of an aero carbon bike. Buy the Emonda. If it doesn't come with carbon wheels, upgrade those. Then you will fly. Will you fly like a young buck? No. But it will be your kind of flying, and you will love it.

I turn 60 in 9 months. But I already own 7 bikes.

I'm a big fan of mid life crises, and try to have one every few years. A new bike is just a gateway crisis.

To my knowledge nobody on BF has ever admitted they regretted buying a new bike. Maybe the specific bike wasn't what they'd hoped but the concept was good. Go for it!

I think you might get a different answer if you go to the "close friends of my wife" forum.

RobbieTunes 08-27-20 07:58 PM

Sure!

I’d never buy a Trek or a Specialized due to their anti-police stance and pro-criminal positions, but that’s up to you.

Nothing political about it, just facts that they’ve published.

I would get a new bike if you want. Hell yeah.

It’s not like a middle-aged man buying a sports car. Bikes don’t pedal themselves. Just remember that you really can’t buy speed, just opportunity.

Are they still offering 30% off new bikes for criminals? I seem to have misplaced the discount code for that.

AlmostTrick 08-27-20 08:28 PM

No you should not... be here posting this question when you should be out picking up your new bike!

Oh, and happy soon to be 60th birthday. Only 6 more weeks for me!

Indeed your statement is political. That they may be critical of the police does not equate with them being pro-criminal. The latter is your political interpretation.

And as this is not P&R, I'll leave it there. You should too. But if you want to debate it further, come on over to P&R

Well, it is a little like a middle-aged man buying a sports car, though as you say, it's healthy.

When I solved my mid-life crisis by turning to cycling, I explained to people, including my wife, that this was a much more constructive and less expensive solution than buying a sports car or chasing after age-inappropriate women.

Now, more than 10 years later, I've spent as much on bikes as the cost of a pretty nice sports car.

Listen to the force, Padawan. Use it wisely!

Of course, go all in! Life is short- enjoy:).

Darn, I need a new bike to get the speeding ticket to get 30% off a new bike. :(

Not to say there's not a few roads I'd love to try in a new sports car. But my wife would demand a new house if I got the sports car. New bike leaves a lot more headroom in the budget!

Flip Flop Rider 08-28-20 09:43 AM

you only live once

Mojo31 08-28-20 12:37 PM

You do know you can have more than one mid-life crisis, don't you? I'm 62 and have had 6 or 7. Each one has lead to some big purchase (boat, car, watch, etc.) according to my wife.

I say go for it. You never know when it will be your last.

tony2v 08-28-20 12:59 PM

Do it!
I got a custom Moots Vamoots RSL for 60th birthday in 2018.

How much does it weigh?

downtube42 09-01-20 12:41 AM

Don't be so dramatic. You're not going all in, you're just buying your next bike.

Buy, enjoy, start thinking about the next one. Repeat.

I'll go against the tide here and suggest a commuter type bike with a more comfortable riding position. Depending on your riding style, of course.
