I love these threads. In this case I was 18 and just starting to ride my ten speed more seriously. I was still on my Varsity and out of high school and wondering why someone would glue their tires on their rims. A few years, yes I’m a glutton for punishment, later I bought my first lightweight but never raced. To me it was transportation and enjoyment, until I saw another person on a ten speed….then it was a race! Oh the memories. It looks like the first pic of Howard shows a double jointed arm . My daughter has this and would have her arm like that when she was on her bike.

Great to read about Dave Walters winning the '72 Nevada City race. He owned Dave's Bike Sport in Santa Rosa, California BITD when I was a sales rep. Every other Thursday I'd see shops in the North Bay as part of the route in my sales territory. I'd get there early dressed to ride. Sometimes it was just me and Dave, most often there'd be a group. I'd shower in his shop, we'd do some business, then off to the other shops in the area. That was back when sales reps came to the store to take orders! Real nice guy. Anybody know what happened with Dave? I know the shop shut down quite awhile ago.

Note how rotated forward the dropout is on this Fuji. And the position of the derailleur movement.

Wow, that account of the Tour de Louisiana reminded me that Bill Guazzo, who finished 10 yards behind John Howard in the 2nd stage, was a friend from my local bike club. I knew from another member that Bill had been a serious racer back in the day with some connection to Raleigh, but it wasn’t anything he talked about much at all. He was always keen to chat about old bikes, however. Sadly, Bill passed from cancer about 4 years ago.

I thought I had posted this 1972 Fuji road test article a few years ago, but I couldn't find it with my initial search.
I just found it and edited the first post of this thread to include the link to the Fuji road test post.
That post also includes a pdf version of the article.
