sex and training

I was watching a leno interview mayweather and apparently the guy didnt f>>> for 6 weeks bc he was training for the fight: apparently it was bad for the legs. of course you hear the same thing in cycling, about how before and during the grand tours everyone keeps the trouser snake hidden. I was wondering whether anyone had any specific observations or anecdotes about whether this is true or whether this is antiquidated tradition.

dmotoguy 05-09-07 08:41 PM

i dont think cippo believed in this, so either do I

Flynko 05-09-07 08:42 PM

My complete lack of sex during high school didn't help me. At least now I have an excuse.

patentcad 05-09-07 08:45 PM

If anybody thinks Cippo eschewed Ptang whilst racing they are smoking more crack than Doc Ray.

Tennis:

Yannick Noah boasted of having sex in the locker prior to entering the court. Said it calmed and made him play better. That was circa '85. You bet there some young college players spanking the monkey before their matches (wasn't easy getting a girl to do the nasty with you in the locker like it was for Noah). Didn't do much... ask me how I know.

CastIron 05-09-07 08:48 PM

Personally, I think before and after every ride should be a ride of a different nature. Pity, I'm married.

ElJamoquio 05-09-07 08:49 PM

Everything you wanted to know about Sex and Cycling, but were afraid to... start a thread about?

VosBike 05-09-07 09:24 PM

Don't make too much differance either way in my expierence.

Now staying out all night in the pusuit...that'll kill yah

EURO-TRASH 05-09-07 09:52 PM

when i was on the US development team(for alpine skiing not cycling) the coaches/trainers advised us to stay away from sex when we were at races and training situations. i believe the only reason for this was lack of sleep, or just to stay rested up. when i moved up to the senior rankings and numerous teams i never heard anything more about it, they just left what we were doing on our personal time up to us. i dont think having tons of sex or a massive lack of sex really makes a difference as long as your rested up when you need to compete/train... on second thought a massive lack of sex may screw with your performance, ha

As long as we're listing out-moded training tips: "don't drink water during athletics; it'll give you stomach cramps"

If you want to subscribe to outmoded thought, you're free to do so.

JOEPIPPAS 05-09-07 10:33 PM

Lemond used to brag about doing it the nite before the world championships. and Sean Kelley used to claim to stay away from the ol' lady at least a week before classics and 2 weeks before grand tours.....
Ha! I say. nothing like getting a hummer on your way to a race.

Stallionforce 05-09-07 11:21 PM

Cipo probably, at some point in his career, managed to get some during a race -- circuit race maybe?

roadgator 05-10-07 12:03 AM

^^ at least a podium girl right after...

Upon further reflection I realize this is not possible. I retract this portion of my previous statement.

That is all.

samsation7 05-10-07 03:01 AM

Now, I'm not a promiscuous person, but I found myself in various situations (frat parties, bar scenes, etc.) the night before the race. Needless to say, having sex the night before kills your performance. The reason is that most races are far away and it'll take a few hours of planning so getting up early is a must. Having sex= too good of a sleep to be up that early.

Chores before sex and you won't have a problem. Get your chores & preparations done, have a nice dinner, a quick roll in the hay (not an all-nighter!) and a nice sleep...you'll feel like a million bucks in the morning and won't have to go rushing around before you leave.

Here's another one for you...back in my football-playing days, the coaches admonished us not to take a hot shower the day before or the day of a game, because it would cause dehydration.

BryE 05-10-07 08:03 AM

If I'm not mistaken, Cheryl Crow stayed with Armstrong during the TdF - didn't seem to affect his performance at all. Also, Hincapie met his wife at the 2003 Tour, though I don't know what they got up to while the race was still on.

Correct.

I did retract that original statement.

Sorry EDR. Sometimes the thrill of the post overcomes all common sense.

This same question was asked on cycling news a couple months ago:

"Sex and cycling
My question is to ask if there is a correlation between sex and cycling performance. (My personal experience in this area is mixed) Basically does performance on the bike diminish with sex and does increased sexual activity cause an increased loss in cycling ability.

Finally, is there a recovery period required to restore full cycling performance (post sex).

Steve Hogg replies:

For an unscientific answer I quote well known (to Australians) Rugby League coaching legend Jack Gibson. In reply to a similar query to yours he answered "It's not sex before a game that is detrimental to performance, but rather staying out all night looking for it."

I remeber reading in a training book (forget which one) that an orgasm can actually help the effects of training by increasing your pain tolerance during intervals.

As for Cipo, I once heard a story that during a stage race (I believe the Giro) he was late for breakfast and one of the team mates or souigners went to see if he was alright. They knocked on the hotel door and he answered the door in a towel with 3 girls in his room still in bed.

Whatever it was :D, I believe she got kicked off the podium girl circuit because of it.

Cypress 05-10-07 10:32 AM

During stage races I'm too tired to get my **** on.

I can't imagine finishing a grand tour stage then going back to a hotel for a romp.

How much of Cipollini's off-course antics is just hype?

Temporary celibacy is for wussy

This highlights the difference between you and I my friend...you ride to win a race, I ride to get laid. Different goals and priorities. :D

I went to a seminar a few years ago that was given by a former member of USPS. Turns out this guy
used to live near Cipo so they would train together. This guy complained that it was annoying to train with him because he was always stopping in the towns they passed through so he could visit his lady friends. The guy wasn't sure what was meant exactly by "lady friends", but he said that Cipo called them his "training partners". Whatever that meant.

I think Cipo is married and has a kid now...
