First 2 weeks without coffee was the worst time in my life. Coffee is the toughest habit to kick both mentally and physically. Anyone else?

Why? Why eliminate coffee?

(We’ll get to the alcohol later.)

PS: Nevermind, I’m late to the party on this conversation.

Oh I've got it down to science. Wake up, turn on the electric kettle, feed the dogs and cats, by that time the water is the right temp, pour in the water, go take a shower, hot coffee waiting for me when I get done.

But I'm not making that much -- enough for my wife and me to have 2 cups, which is all I drink any more. And I bought a stainless steel french press because I was tired of breaking the glass ones but also because it keeps the coffee warm enough while I'm fussing around.

Someone also gifted us a Nespresso when we got married. Super wasteful but boy howdy does it make some tasty espresso. The pods aren't cheap either. I used to save it for early morning rides when I was trying to beat the heat in the hottest part of the summer--wake up, mainline a couple shots of espresso, hit the road. But now I just kind of force myself to start riding and I find I wake up eventually once my heart rate gets up.

That's more up rjones28's alley. And he might be able to smuggle it across the border.

I'd give up coffee before alcohol. But, that's easy considering I've never drank coffee.

LAJ 07-13-21 12:18 PM

Because there's never too much caffeine.

I hope I never have to give up coffee and alcohol.

It's in Indiana, no smuggling required.

French press FTW! I even press when camping. Pre-ground before I leave home, of course.

Had a few GI issues and rosacea and the worst sleep. I started an elimination diet a few years ago and never thought that coffee was part of the problem. I been drinking strong coffee for about 40 years daily. I dont drink soft drinks - rarely.
From my elimination diet my health improved, but still had some bloating and could not get restful sleep. Now, about 35 days without caffeine - I feel much better, sleep is amazing.
I am not going to be without coffee forever, just for now.
Quoting Michael Pollan. who quit coffee for 3 months and wrote a book:
Pollan's new audiobook, Caffeine, explores the science of caffeine addiction and withdrawal — and the broader impact that coffee and tea have had on the modern world. Caffeine, he says, is a powerful drug that alters the brain in surprising ways.
"I think the word 'addiction' has a lot of moral baggage attached to it," he says. "As [Johns Hopkins researcher] Roland Griffiths told me, if you have a steady supply of something, you can afford it and it's not interfering with your life, there's nothing wrong with being addicted."
these quotes are from NPR article which I just searched for, not a big supporter of NPR. Here is the link back to the article NPR article

I used aeropress for camping and a manual grinder. That way I used to get the best gourmet coffee.

I don't do FP at home, but I've been bringing a FP and a little Bodum burr grinder along on trips to VA (I've been tempted to bring my espresso machine and Mazzer, but haven't... yet). You should check out James Hoffman's French Press method on the YouTubes - just be careful, he could coax you down a deep rabbit hole.

They build proper autos in Canada. So if I really wanted a Canadian car, there's no need to get that kind of contraption.

Already done. I use his method of steep for 4 minutes, then stir, steep another 4-5 minutes. Works like a charm but it is time consuming.

Very much so.

I have an Aeropress that I use when traveling and it's the same basic principle as a french press but, you know, a little different.

Anyway one of the funniest things I saw was I looked up some youtube videos to make sure I was doing it right. The first search result was this extremely long video put out my some trendy Portland coffee shop complete with stereotypical hipster dude in the woods, some unnecessary MTB footage in the middle for no reason, and about 18 extra complicated steps.

But then if you look up the video from the guy who ACTUALLY INVENTED THE AEROPRESS, he's just some old retired Navy engineer who looks like everyone's dad or grandpa and he didn't do any of that extra crap--heat up the water, pour it in, stir it, and press. Boom. That's it.

Meteorologist my ass. You useless morons could only do a better job by using chicken bones and chanting. Eff every last one of you sideways. On a step ladder. In one of you nonpredicted surprise thunderstorms.. I could do better with a double headed coin.

I'm never doing another project on my "vacation".

I now return you to your regular program already in progress..

I am not inclined to give up either coffee or alcohol, but I did long ago give up coffee AND alcohol, after trying to get to sleep after an evening drinking Irish Coffee, the world's best tasting pharmaceutical mistake.

I surprised myself by drinking considerably less than I expected the last year and a half. I made sure I was thoroughly equipped with rum, tequila, gin, various whiskeys, and mixers, but then only occasionally bothered to drink anything.

I like my coffee hot, like brew temp hot and that’s what I dislike about a FP; temp is too low by the time it’s done. I have slightly better luck with an aero press which I use often in the evenings. During the day, it’s espresso, only..
