New shoes and laces
 

Got a new pair of Giro Rumble VR shoes to replace my three-year old pair. Lots of wear on the soles - is that the result of about 13,000 miles? Or, have I walked too many hills? More wear on the left one - typically put down that foot at stops. Less cleat clicking on hard floors with the new shoes. Purchased from Chain Reaction in the UK - had never ordered from a UK/Euro store before but not available in my size at most US online retailers I looked at.

I ordered a pair of those last fall directly from the Giro site. I like them. I have pretty big feet and not all brands work. I got the 15 and they are just big enough (I wear a 14 in Adidas).

I have the same blue with the gum-soles I got last August and I love them! Got mine on Amazon for around $100 USD. They have a nice retro sorta look, they're super comfy, and if you're dressed casual, they don't look ridiculous when you sit at a cafe/restaurant in them.

I like the looks of those shoes and might need to get some for myself!

The reviews seem to indicate they are so comfortable that people wear them a lot walking around...maybe that is why yours have worn down?

I do have one question...I usually avoid bike shoes with laces because I am concerned the laces might get caught in the chainring. I assume they are short laces and stay tied reliably?

Yes, the elastic loop does a good job of helping the laces stay put. Have not tied in double knot since figured out how that worked.
The shoes are the most comfortable for walking around in of any cycling shoes I've had in the last couple of decades. (Previous shoes mostly Shimano)

I get a lot of use out of my Giro Rumbles. The only better shoes I have ever owned were my old Avocets, but these are a close second.

Trying to be artsy last year haha. Great shoes, 100% will buy the same when needed.

With any laced shoes used while biking, after tying them I twist the dangley bits into one "cylinder" and tuck them under some crossed laces at the front of the shoe. Next time I lace up I'll post a picture.

I am looking for a decent shoe to wear with my old steel cage clips on my vintage bike and I've seen a thread or two with the same question but no one has a solid response. Is there a shoe that's best to wear with these pedals that isn't old leather vintage racing shoes?

Really, it just needs to be a light, breathable black shoe with a hard sole. Does it exist?

Currently I'm just wearing a pair of trainers but they are not ideal. The traction on the sole makes gliding in and out of the pedal awkward and I've actually had the laces get caught in the chain on the crank which is dangerous.

I mentioned this in other threads. About 10 years or so ago there were touring shoes that would accept a cleat, for clipless, but could be used with straps and clips. They have smooth rubber soles and are walkable, so not quite as stiff as a road shoe. I think most of them have been discontinued and replaced with more tennis looking shoes for platform pedals.

The shoes I’m using are Specialized Elite Touring shoes. I found them on eBay. I can’t say they are the best, but they are the same shape as a road shoe so they slide in and out of the clips easily. They use Velcro straps not laces.

I found a PUMA shoe which looked like a bike shoe with a hard sole and had a velcro strap as well but they are no longer available in retail sales.

It really is an eBay hit or miss. But you can find some gems there from time to time. The only issue is sizing. If you can read some older reviews of the shoes you might glean a bit more info.
