OK I got my "Message from the CEO" email from Performance.

Wonder if Dan's Comp will still be my go-to for spokes after this change.

I wonder which brand AMain is going to dump? I mean, The Nashbar and Performance sites are pretty much the same, as far as I can tell.

That strikes me as a little extreme.

I've never really understood the knife fascination, what do you gain with something boutique over something like a production Wusthof (which is the chef knife I have)? It stays sharp and cuts everything I need it to - I've never had the want for anything more. Although I suppose the same logic could be applied to bicycles, a bike's a bike, right?

Is it one of those things that you don't understand until you've actually used one?

I really need to get the thru-axle dropouts for the rear on my Canfield. Twice now I've pulled the rear wheel out of alignment, and I don't really want to tighten the skewer any more than it already is - I've broken them before.

Nova had an excellent special called "Secrets of the Viking Sword". They had a guy reverse-engineer how these were built. Sword-making presents many of the same challenges as with making high quality steel bicycle frames. You want lightness, you want strength, you want flex (to keep the sword from breaking off during battle) but not too much flex. In essence, you want durability, and you want the metal in your sword lighter and stronger than your opponent's, for maximum tactical advantage.

The techniques used to produce these swords, I found very interesting. Lot of heat treating, pounding out, and adding of special ingredients at critical times, and building of specialized kilns capable of reaching extremely high temps. Must have seemed like sorcery at the time. I think a lot of the knowledge gained from building swords during the middle ages was later used in developing materials like Reynolds 531, which was also used by the Brits during WWII to build strong, lightweight airplane frames, and helped win the war for the Allies.

It's like any other hobby, there's something in the makeup of an individual that drives him to varying degrees of obsession about a particular activity. Doesn't make sense to some, but to others it's consuming. I have friends, for example, who struggle to understand why I would spend thousands of dollars on a freaking bicycle. Meanwhile, I struggle to understand why others are so driven to constantly upgrade their bikes, if it rides good and comfy it's good enough for me. Clearly everybody's different.

Slow morning, everybody must be studying the Google hip-hop tutorial.

It’s 8% for 8 miles. No rest. Just right.

It’s something like $8 to ride up right? I don’t mind paying, bigger concern is whether or not the road will be open

I had a friend stop by with his new motorcycle, some sort of v-twin thing similar to a Harley. Said it was $8,000. Drives home the high prices of bicycles especially since I’ve been looking at a higher end Giant TCR with discs and Di2. Top TCR is $11,000. :foo:

It was a little bit of running mixed in with a lot of walking. Not enough to count.

Still stupid, though.
